100 Miles-per-Hour in the 100 Acre Wood
Round Two of the Rally America Championship Series Motors to Missouri
SALEM, MO. (February 12, 2007) – When competitors like Lauchlin O’Sullivan, driver of the K&N Engineering Subaru, come to the storybook home of Winnie-the-Pooh and Tigger too for the 100 Acre Wood Rally Feb. 23-24, they won’t be looking for honey like Pooh bear. But they will be on the hunt for something just as precious; points to qualify for this summer’s X Games 13. Oh yeah, they also want to do well in the season-long competition to crown the 2007 Rally America National Champion.
“We only have five more rally events before the X Games so every stage at every rally becomes so important to your season,” states O’Sullivan, who knows all about precision driving under pressure through his TV and feature film work. “With more top teams in the series and competitors coming from as far away as Sweden, England and Australia, every point and every position on the road is hard-fought and well-earned.”
Unlike the unpredictability and slick conditions created by the ice and snow of last month’s Sno*Drift Rally in Michigan, Missouri’s 100 Acre Wood Rally is home to some of the best rally racing conditions in the U.S.
Set in the picturesque Ozark Mountains about three hours outside of St. Louis, the roads around Salem are twisty, dry and fast, making it an ideal spot for the rally drivers to showcase their considerable car control skills.
“We haven’t run 100 Acre Wood before and I am looking forward to it,” says Scott Putnam, the co-driver of the K&N Engineering Subaru. “The reports we get are that the stages should be smooth and flowing with some twisty sections thrown in which will suit our style well. After a five-month hiatus, we will be back in our primary car; the Prodrive of England-built CPD1 Subaru WRX STi, so the chance to jump on things immediately should be there.”
One unique aspect to the 100 Acre Wood Rally that should allow the competitors to at least get the jump on the course – if not each other – is the opportunity to drive the roads in advance and personalize their stage notes. Of course this will be done at legal speeds, not race speeds, and with street cars, not rally cars, but it could result in higher rally stage speeds and smaller time differentials between the top teams.
All that’s fine with Lauchlin O’Sullivan who sees the 100 Acre Wood not only as a rally, but as a chance at redemption.
“We regard the 100 Acre Wood Rally as an opportunity to make up for what we thought was a less-than-our-best result at the first rally of the season last month. This time we will be in the car that ran so well for us at Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (3rd place) and X Games (4th place), so I'm looking at least for similar success, if not an outright overall win. It will be tough competition, but this will be the first time Scott and I have run consecutive events. Hopefully as a result we can get up to speed a bit quicker, rather than taking the first day as a practice session and then attacking on the second. We are very much looking forward to 100 Acre Wood.”
And with a nod to Winnie-the-Pooh, maybe the guys can use the “Show-Me” state to write their own “storybook ending.”
