Birmingham News: Honda, Subaru argue over green plant status
It's a case of Honda versus Subaru, and it has nothing to do with selling automobiles. Instead, the two carmakers disagree over whose manufacturing plant was the first to reuse or recycle sufficient material so that waste winds up being sent to garbage dumps. Both are claiming the honor - Honda for its plant in Talladega County, Subaru for its in Lafayette, Ind. Such "zero-landfill" status is much coveted by manufacturers who are increasingly conscious of appealing to the environmental concerns of prospective customers and cutting costs by using and disposing of as little material as possible.
Cars.com: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX
There's no shortage of sub-$30,000 performance compacts available today, but the Impreza WRX hatchback I tested is one of the better ones for the money. WRX is a respected nameplate among sport-compact enthusiasts, as Subaru has been fielding performance versions of its Impreza under this name since the 2002 model year. For 2009, Subaru ups the ante with a significantly more powerful version of the WRX that has a starting price only slightly higher than the 2008 model's.
Automobile Magazine: Toyota-Subaru Coupe Delayed
Toyota and Subaru have delayed the production of their jointly developed sports coupe announced earlier this year.  The 2+2 coupe has been pushed back at least 18 months, to 2012, while Toyota discusses the ideal time to start production with Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru's parent company.

A long-time SIA supplier, Carlex received the SIA Quality Improvement Award in 2005 and an SIA Appreciation Award in 1998.
Seeking Alpha: Impatient with Upcoming Recovery?
Have you been paying attention to the sports news? Over the past two weeks Toyota has withdrawn from Formula 1 and Subaru has just withdrawn from the World Rally Championship. Even Toyota has signaled Formula 1 cutbacks. Why should any investor care unless you were into that kind of thing? Because of the reason they withdrew!
Washington Times: 2009 Subaru Forester makes room for more
The Subaru Forester has been completely reworked for the 2009 model year, bringing more passenger room and greater cargo space. Built on a longer wheelbase than previous models, the newest Forester improves passenger comfort and ride quality, and brings more precise driving dynamics, because of a new, firmer chassis design.
Left Lane: Toyota pushes rear-wheel drive coupe plans back to 2012
Toryota has already announced that it has indefinitely delayed a joint venture with Isuzu to develop a small diesel powerplant, and now comes word that dwindling sales have affected another Toyota project. Toyota will be delaying the launch of a new coupe, which is currently being co-developed with Subaru.
CarReview.com: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Review - Subaru’s rally-rocket steps it up a notch
Subaru is generally known for building rugged cars that perform great for outdoor adventures. Their all-wheel drive technology has long earned them a solid reputation with the skiing and snow-boarding crowd. The one exception to this overall image of rugged outdoorsmen-type car is their Impreza WRX. The WRX has garnered much praise from auto-enthusiasts for its performance and handling in a price-band well below similar vehicles. I was excited to find out what all the fuss was about. Was it truly a blast to drive, or just the best you can get under $30,000?
Turbo & High Tech Performance: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI - Power Check!
What began as a baseline dyno run of 223 whp and 250 ft-lb of torque was quickly revamped with our final run of 285 whp and 352 ft-lb of torque. A gain of 62 whp and 102 lb-ft of torque turned this '08 STI into a whole new rocketship.

National Post (CA): Road Test: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STi
Years of punishment on the FIA World Rally Championship circuit has paid off handsomely for Subaru -- one need look no further than the hyper Impreza WRX STi. Everything from the all-wheel-drive system to the manner in which the engine and electronic traction/stability control systems interact can be customized. Spend a couple of hours playing with the STi and it's possible to set the car up so that it can be driven to the absolute limit with a rare confidence.

Carpages (UK): SDR V-Storm Sportscar Now Available With Subaru Engine
With a target weight of approximately 750kg, the performance of the new Subaru powered version with anything from 280bhp to 400+bhp, should be breath taking. The first car currently in build uses a tuned STi power unit with an estimated 310bhp to make a truly rapid car.

Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Coupe Heading To Detroit?

Subaru To Offer FWD Impreza To Europe?
Rumour has it that Subaru is contemplating selling a front-wheel-drive version of the Impreza in Europe, a move that will give the manufacturer a direct competitor to the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback. Subaru currently offers a bum-draggin’ variant of the Impreza in its homeland of Japan, where it’s known as the Impreza 15S. The FWD 15S deletes the Impreza’s weighty transfer case, rear differential and all associated driveshafts for a substantial weight saving. Power from the 1.5-litre EL15 boxer four is a lowly 81kW, with torque pegged at just 144Nm.

Fuel economy, safety, size, comfort and off-road capability put this vehicle ahead of the pack, writes motoring editor Alastair Sloane. The latest Subaru Forester has been described as "just right for the times" - that's one of the reasons why it's the Herald Car of the Year.

Automobile Magazine: 2009 Subaru Forester - Behind the Scenes of a SEMA Show Vehicle
If you watch enough cable TV, you'd think than any monkey with a flame wrench can build a killer machine in twenty minutes or less with parts scavenged from unaware neighbors. Reality lives on a different planet: one inhabited by skilled professionals working to a plan. This is the story of one such plan.
JCOnline.com: Subaru sales down 8% from last year
A report released Tuesday by Subaru of America Inc. shows the company sold 13,706 units last month. Last November, sales totaled 14,868 vehicles. However, through the first 11 months of this year, Subaru had performed better than almost every carmaker. The company reported sales of 170,412 units for the January-November period. That's up 1 percent from the same time frame in 2007.

Real Estate Dispatch: Investors & Landlords: What Kind of Car Should You Drive?
No, you’re not reading Consumer Reports or Motor Trend. But believe it or not, your choice of car can have an impact on your level of real estate investment success. This is because your choice of car makes an impression on people, and you always want to make the right impression. And of course, since cars are wasting assets - they very rarely rise in value - the less money you spend on them, the more you’ll have to invest in more practical things - like your next deal. I was thinking about this recently because my wife and I are buying a car. We’re replacing the old Subaru Outback with… drum-roll, please… another Subaru.

Yahoo! Finance: Subaru 'Shares the Love' in its First-of-a-Kind Cause-Related Campaign

DesMoines Register: Sanchez: I think your Subaru is sexy
A man who drives a 2000 Subaru Outback (yes, that is a station wagon) is not going to be the kind of guy who's interested in rushing out to get the latest model on the market. And, my fellow women, there will certainly come a time when we are not the latest model on the market. If he can stick with a car that has 278,000 miles on the odometer, he's not afraid of commitment.
Asian Weeek: Subaru Takes New, Roomier Forester Out of the Box
Well, the sequel is out. And while the basic Forester DNA remains intact — high seating, 2.5-liter Boxer engine and standard symmetrical all-wheel-drive — the third-generation Forester is bigger and … (OK, Subaru diehards, get a tight grip on your inner quirkiness…) a bit more stylish.
Jalopnik: GM Files Patents For Tribeca-Based Saab 9-6X, Tale Of The Saaburu Maybe Not Complete
The Saab forums are alight with chatter about recently filed GM patents showing off images of a Saabified Subaru Tribeca which resembles a four door version of a design mock up unofficially photographed way back in 2005. The interesting part is the supposed Saab 9-6X swipes much of its architecture and styling from the Subaru Tribeca, even though GM split with the Japanese automaker shortly after the original spy photos.
The Gazette: Subaru greens its cars, creates PZEV line
While every car manufacturer out there struggles to release green vehicles, intent on saving the planet and saving you money at the pumps, and labelling them all repetitively "hybrid," Subaru decided to branch out and release a vehicle that is very much green, but doesn't harbour any of the usual earthy qualities, including the overused name.
Lafayette Journal and Courier: SIA on sidelines of bailout talks
But the company that owns the Subaru of America Inc. plant in Lafayette doesn't expect to be a player in whatever emerges from efforts to allow the auto industry to get a portion of the $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan that was approved last month by Congress. "Right now we're doing better than most (automakers). We're likely to be one of only a couple where sales are up this year," said Michael McHale, a spokesman for Subaru of America Inc. "We're doing OK this year."

Edmonton Journal (CA): Blazing a new trail for gasoline engines
The partial-zero emissions vehicle (PZEV) rating of Subaru's Legacy and Outback models takes the gasoline engine to a place it has never been -- it is 90 per cent cleaner than a non-PZEV vehicle. On the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's air pollution scale (which runs from zero to 10), Subaru's PZEV vehicles earn a stellar 9.5 points, which is just half a point behind a zero-emissions electric vehicle. To put this number into perspective, the outgoing Legacy rated a six out of 10; the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Nissan Altima Hybrid earn eights.
Examiner: Test-drive: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX
Anyone can build a car that accelerates quickly or posts good skidpad numbers. Building a car that can do those and actually be fun to drive in the process... well, that is what Subaru is trying to do with the 09 WRX.

Motor Trend: Report: Joint Toyota, Subaru Rear-Drive Coupe Coming to U.S. as a Scion
Even before Toyota officially announced its intention to partner with Subaru on a small, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive coupe, a rumor and speculation brush fire has been burning around the car. The latest flames are licking up over what brand(s) the new coupe will wear when it finally hits the U.S. market sometime in 2011. According to recent Internet chatter, the Subieota, or Toyobaru, will instead don the Scion badge for Toyota when it comes to the States.
Motor Authority: Report: Toyota-Subaru joint project to be branded as Scion in U.S.
News of a Toyota-Subaru joint sports car project has inspired mixed feelings - trepidation on the part of Subaru owners that loathe Toyota's influence, yet also hope for Toyota fans that long for the days of the Supra and Celica, or even the AE86 Corolla and MR2. Now word that the car will be branded as a Scion in the U.S. has emerged, and it makes sense as the logical home for a car targeted at the younger generation.

Washington Post: Self-Assured Agility: 2009 Subaru Outback
Schunemunk Mountain looms high in the autumn sky in bright orange, red and yellow. It is a splendid sight, well worth the 300-mile trip here from my home in Virginia, where similar natural beauty abounds. Staying home was an option. But I enjoy driving. Coming here to a daughter's home in the shadow of the Schunemunk was reason enough to hit the road. The 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited wagon available for the drive was an added attraction.

Farmers Guardian (UK): Subaru open doors with new diesel ‘boxer’ engine
Having honed the horizontally opposed engine over the last 40 years, it made sense for Subaru to retain the layout for what is known as the world’s first diesel boxer engine. With pairs of opposing pistons, it’s a layout that is said to cancel out secondary harmonic vibrations, leading to an ultra-smooth package. And having spent a week behind the wheel of a Legacy Sports Tourer, FG is inclined to agree. It is a sweet, free revving two-litre that is so hushed and keen, you would be hard pressed to tell it is a diesel. It revs and sounds like a petrol with a fine pedigree, but easily gave 44mpg back.
Motor Trend: Hot Rod (Soccer) Mama! Subaru Bringing 315-HP Forester XTI Concept to SEMA
The 2009 Subaru Forester is already an excellent vehicle -- small, swift and chuckable yet with surprising off-road prowess and interior room. In fact, the new Forester is so good that we recently dubbed it our Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year. That said, the little Subie crossover isn't exactly a hard-core rock crawler, and despite offering a 2.5XT model with 224 hp and 226 lb-ft of torque, its 7.2-sec 0-60 mph time won't win any drag races, either. So for this year's SEMA show, the automaker is addressing these concerns with a new Mountain Rescue Vehicle, as well as a screaming fast, STI-influenced concept for soccer moms who have motor oil in their veins -- the Forester XTI.
Autoblog: In The Autoblog Garage: 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5 GT 5-Door
It says something when an automaker sees fit to give the tachometer a place of prominence in the gauge cluster. "We're serious," it implies. Unamused sports cars like the Porsche 911 assign the rev counter a level of gravity beyond being a glorified "engine is running" idiot light. Fortunately, the Paprika Red Subaru Impreza GT 5-door that recently arrived in the Autoblog Garage stated its intentions clearly by placing this most important gauge in its "proper" place. New to the Impreza range, the GT model is a chafing dish full of original WRX simmering through an automatic transmission. An autobox may seem anathema to the 224 horsepower turbo-fed boxer, but we were pleased to discover that all the fun is not sopped up by a spongy tranny
Cars.com: Weekend Athlete: 2009 Subaru Impreza GT
Now, this is exactly what I want from a car I'm taking to a race. It's fun to drive, holds my toys, has great visibility, looks quick without being obnoxious — and it moves. So, yeah, I'm in love with this car, but objectivity demands that Subaru be tested just like everybody else. As it turns out, in the cold, hard light of day, there are some flaws. For starters, this is a hatchback/wagon, and that alone sends some people into a conniption. Those people need to go breathe into a paper bag for a while, because a hatchback gives you a nice, low load floor and — if you’re the type to put a rack on your car — the roof rack won’t be 20 feet up in the air. Subaru was also kind enough to design the hatch to open high enough to keep tall folks from ramming their head into it.
Washington Times: Subaru WRX STI one of a kind
Since rolling onto North American streets in 2002, Subaru´s Impreza WRX has earned its rep as a relatively affordable high-performance automobile. It was so well received here that the following year Subaru introduced the 2004 WRX STi (Subaru Tecnica International) model – a street-legal version of the car developed for World Rally competition. With its turbocharged four and all-wheel drive, it immediately became an aspirational vehicle for the Asian-import tuning crowd and a favorite among performance-hungry drivers on a budget.

Automobile Magazine: REVIEWS:  2009 Subaru Impreza WRX
Changes in the automotive world tend to happen at a snail's pace. It often takes years for manufacturers to recognize and correct the problems that cause would-be customers to walk out of the dealership empty-handed. Not so at Subaru, which pulled the handbrake on its new-for-2008 Impreza WRX, flicked the steering wheel, and executed the quickest one-eighty this side of a rally stage.
Cars.com: 2009 Impreza GT
Even though the Impreza sedan and hatchback were redesigned last year, Subaru is still working on improving its compact car. For 2009, there's a new 2.5GT trim level of the Impreza, and it uses the 224-horsepower engine that used to power the performance-oriented WRX.

Subaru Ups Law Enforcement Street Cred With STi Police Car

Itasca police are hoping to use the sport compact to reach out to younger performance car drivers.
20th Anniversary Subaru Impreza WRX STi Revealed For Japan
Subaru is celebrating 20 years of hi-po Scoobies with a 300-unit run of WRX STi Anniversary Edition models. The main differences of importance to enthusiasts are in the suspension, where new coilover damper units stiffen up the handling and carry 18-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment.
Marketwatch: Fuji Heavy ups first-half profit view to $44 million
Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars and trucks, revised its profit outlook upward for the half-year ending September 30, because of stronger-than-expected sales and a weaker-than-expected yen during the half year.
Japan Times: Subaru continues to drive to a different beat: Reputation for unique, quality cars contrasts with weak branding, design strategy
There is no brand in Japan with as much unused potential as Subaru. It is kind of like Apple Inc. was in the late 1990s before it came roaring back to prominence with the return of Steve Jobs. You will not find a more talented and dedicated, if a bit anachronistic, group of automotive engineers. The problem is they make unique products but have failed to build a brand that connects them to a wide range of customers. It is a textbook case of a company that still believes, "if we make good products people will buy them." That era ended with the last century.
Autocar (UK): Update: Toyota/Subaru sportscar
More details about the new sportscar that is being jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru have emerged. Subaru is planning to aim its version of the car at the sub-£20k performance market traditionally dominated by hot hatches and cheap roadsters like the Mazda MX-5 when it goes on sale in 2011.
Autoblog: More Rendered Speculation: Toyota/Subaru FR sportscar, no turbos for the EU
Japan's buff books are at it again, peppering a bit of informed speculation with a healthy dose of rendered conjecture to create images of Toyota's front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car. While we dig the pic above, which blends a bit of Fisker Karma with the Mitsuoka Orochi, we're giving the design a snowcone's chance in Hades of resembling the production version of the coupe.
Four Wheeler: 2009 Honda Pilot Vs. 2009 Subaru Forester - CUV Trail Test
Hold on now-before you fire off any more hate mail, take a good look around your 'hood. See a few of these CUV rigs parked on your street, or alongside the trail? You may not own one, but we'd wager there's a fair chance that your wife, or your neighbor, or your boss, or your boss' wife has one as a daily driver and weekend play rig. And besides, any time an automaker boasts about its vehicles' "off-pavement prowess," well heck, we're always ready to put their rigs to the test.
Newsday.com: Motor Trend's top 2009 SUV: Subaru Forester
Motor Trend magazine has picked the 2009 Subaru Forester as its sport utility vehicle of the year, citing its comfort on the road, competency off the pavement and fuel efficiency in a time of high fuel prices. The award, announced yesterday, came from a field of 13 finalists mostly made up of car-based crossover vehicles, with only three traditional body-on-frame truck-based SUVs. It will be featured in the magazine's edition that hits newsstands on Nov. 3.
Motor Trend: 2009 Sport/Utility Of The Year: Subaru Forester
Clearcut: Soaring Fuel Prices and a Fizzling Economy Have Made It a Jungle Out There, But This Year's Winner Is Easy to See for the Trees

It would be easy to say that this year's winner is a knee-jerk reaction, that the editors of Motor Trend responded to the skyrocketing cost of gasoline like the rest of the driving public by abruptly abandoning the traditional SUV formula for something smaller, more fuel-efficient, greener, more, well, forest-y. It would be easy to categorize our selection of the Subaru Forester as Motor Trend's 2009 Sport/Utility of the Year as a choice made solely at the pump, but it wouldn't be true.
Edmunds Inside Line: With the Chop-Top GDB Impreza, Less Is More
There is a simple formula for making the GDB-generation Subaru Impreza look absolutely stunning, a formula that Subaru could have applied when it designed the car in the studio. It's a design strategy that makes any car look fast, even when it's not moving. And so we present a Subaru Impreza WRX with a chopped roof, something you don't see every day. In fact, you'll have to go to Japan to see one.
New Car Net (UK): Subaru Legacy Outback 2.0 Boxer Diesel
And so it was. 'Tick-tock...tick-tock....tock-tick...' (it is an old clock). As the world rushed by at a mile a minute, all I could hear was my mum's clock. Nothing remarkable in that, you might think, until you recall that the Outback in question is powered by a diesel engine. And instead of a characteristic diesel sound signature, all I could hear was 'Tick-tock....tick...ti....' Here the test ended as I had forgotten to bring the key. But the point was already made - the new Subaru diesel engine is remarkably quiet.

MAutoweek: Boxer's day: Subaru expands its boxer diesel offerings
Subaru says that the engine could pass the 43-state test in its current state, perhaps with slight revisions. What's unclear is whether Subaru believes that's good enough or whether the Japanese company will wait until it complies with 50-state emissions levels. The question then becomes what strategy Subaru follows to achieve 50-state compliance--whether it will go the urea-injection route or the path Honda says it will follow to bring its diesels stateside. Honda forgoes urea injection by using a highly specialized type of catalytic converter.
Edmunds Inside Line: Japan: Subaru Impreza Anesis
Does the Subaru Impreza Anesis look familiar? Although it has just launched in the home market of Japan, the Anesis is a kissing cousin to the Impreza sedan already on sale in the United States.
Motor Trend: Quick Test: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX
Guess what? Subaru listened. To criticism and complaints, to forums and magazines, the company listened. And as a remedy, Subaru has outfitted the 2009 WRX with a stiffer suspension, better tires, and a bigger turbocharger. The updated WRX's 2.5L boxer-four now delivers a healthy 265 hp and 244 lb-ft of torque, enough to blow last year's WRX out of the water and nip at the heels of the current STI. Joining the refreshed WRX in the 2009 Impreza lineup is the Impreza 2.5GT, a vehicle that's essentially the same model as the 2008 WRX.
JC Online: SIA pulls back a bit on production
A bit of the economic pain being felt in the U.S. auto industry has made its way to Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. in Lafayette. Production of Subaru vehicles was scaled back Friday with 1,400 associates affected by the decision to shut down each of the two, normal, eight-hour shifts after six hours.
"Each (associate) was given the opportunity to remain at work until the end of their normal shift doing 'kaizen' and project work, so they can earn a full eight hours pay," said SIA senior vice president Tom Easterday. Kaizen is a Japanese word for "continual improvement."
"Fortunately, Subaru has not been impacted as substantially by the declining automotive market at this point. We are, of course, continuing to monitor the situation."
About.com: 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5GT test drive
Since its introduction in 2008, the current version of the Subaru Impreza has been high on my list of recommended cars, largely because of its commitment to safety (standard all-wheel-drive, standard antilock brakes, and, as of 2009, standard electronic stability control) and easy-to-drive nature. 2009 sees the introduction of a new version of the Impreza, the 2.5GT, with more power and creature comforts. So does more Impreza mean a better Impreza? Read on.

Popular Mechanics: 2009 Subaru Forester Diesel Test Drive: 37-MPG Crossover Right For America?
Subaru's turbodiesel flat four drops into the engine bay of the Forester small SUV as comfortably as a pair of Birkenstock sandals slip onto the feet of an outdoorsy Vermonter. Full of wholesome, organic, crunchy goodness, the 2009 Subaru Forester 2.0D is just right for a lifestyle that includes regular backpacking, antiquing, politically conscious activism and swiping used fry oil from the back of Wendy's to brew homemade biodiesel. The only mystifying thing is that it won't be on sale in Vermont or, for that matter, any other American state. This one was built (in Japan) for Europe. Should Subaru bring it stateside? We can certainly make a case for itAutoweek: LONG-TERMERS: 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5XT Limited
With the crossover segment growing so rapidly, it seemed like a good idea to add one of the newest such vehicles to the AutoWeek long-term test fleet. And while there were numerous to choose from--the Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV4, the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Acura RDX among the many--our decision was cemented after driving the 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5XT Limited around Catalina Island off the California coast
Jalopnik: Subaru Boxer Diesel Unveiled For Forester, Impreza And Legacy In Paris
Subaru has finally pulled the trigger on its EE20 Boxer Diesel in a big way here at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. They've seen fit to lay down a copious supply of cross sectioned and exploded-view engines for a sufficient supply of engine porn and have thrown them into some cars to boot, namely the Subaru Forester 2.0D, the Subaru Impreza 2.0D, and the Subaru Legacy 2.0D. As you might have guessed, they're all outfitted with the same 2.0 liter horizontally opposed boxer diesel, a common rail, turbocharged oil burner good for 144 HP in the Forester and 147 HP in the Legacy and Impreza. All engines make 259 lb-ft of torque between 1800 and 2400 RPM while returning about 40 MPG on the European combined fuel cycle. Definitely some nice numbers, now if only we could get 'em in the States. Complete, and we do mean complete, details on the Boxer Diesel engine, galleries on the lineup and nearly-NSFW engine pics below.

Car Magazine (UK): Subaru Forester 2.0D (2008) CAR review
We’re already familiar with the Forester, Subaru’s take on the junior SUV market. It grew in stature and capacity as it morphed from last-gen to current model, but it lacked one crucial element: diesel power. Now it’s here, in the form of Subaru’s brilliant – and unique – 2.0-litre flat four. Does this new body/engine combo mean the Forester can now take on the established RAV4/CR-V herd – or even the Ford Kuga latecomer?

Motor Trend:First Drive: 2010 Subaru Forester 2.0D
Subaru has built the world's first flat four-cylinder diesel for production cars. Europeans have been driving it in the Legacy and Outback since January, and in about a month, after the Paris Auto Show, they'll have it in the new third-gen Forester, too. Americans...well, we'll have to wait, but we could get the boxer-diesel Forester sometime in 2010. If, that is, Subaru gets the message (wink wink) that American buyers are seriously interested.
The Auto Channel: 2009 Subaru Outback 3.0R Limited
For many automakers, crossovers are the new thing. For Subaru, well, Subaru invented the "car with SUV characteristics" crossover concept back in 1995 with the first Outback, and has successfully been selling a variety of Outbacks ever since.
Paddock Talk: Road Test Special Report: Subaru WRX STI Ride & Drive Event
I got the email just a few days before the launch asking if I wanted to attend the event. I gave it a consideration for all of 3 seconds and responded with an emphatic - YES! Usually a press launch is a basic introduction to a new vehicle followed by a relatively short pre-determined road trip lasting of roughly 30 minutes with a change of driver at the halfway point. I’d never been to a Subaru launch before, so that’s what I showed up expecting. I also arrived at the event immediately after picking up a Toyota hybrid that I’d scheduled for a two-week summer road trip. Talk about a contrast in vehicles. One is a compact full-blown rally car built for terrorizing the general populace, and the other is a mid-sized 4-door sedan designed for comfort and maximum fuel efficiency.

Easier.com: Subaru Forester Boxer diesel with class-leading features
Subaru’s widely-acclaimed new Boxer Diesel engine is now available in the new Forester where it is expected to account for 80 per cent of sales and eventually turn the SUV into Subaru’s best-selling model.
First introduced in the Legacy and Outback this February, the 2.0 litre, four-cylinder horizontally-opposed Boxer Diesel engine offers outstanding refinement and throttle-response plus exceptional handling thanks to its light weight and low centre-of gravity.

Jalopnik: Subaru Forester And Impreza Boxer Diesel Bringing 37 MPG To Paris Motor Show
The Subaru Forester Diesel and Impreza Diesel are coming to next month’s Paris Motor Show equipped with the new Subaru Boxer Turbo Diesel engine. The innovatively light and compact engine is capable of delivering 145 HP and a huge 258 lb-ft of torque while returning up to 37 MPG (combined) when paired with a 6-speed manual transmission in the Forester. Hmmm, a practical, capable crossover SUV that drives well and gets 37 MPG? Yes please. But will it come to the US? Maybe.

The Australian: Forester asserts safety credentials
Subaru is, for example, the sole brand in Australia to stick NCAP ratings on its showroom cars. (There are moves afoot to mandate this.) And with the new, third-generation Forester now on sale, the niche Japanese manufacturer still stands -- in 2008, for goodness sake -- as one of the few in the compact 4WD class able to obtain, let alone spruik, a confidence-inspiring five-star result.
Jets.ru: Fuji Heavy Industries to delay development of Subaru Jet
Fuji Heavy Industries plans to put off the development of a new business jet for several years because of funding constraints, although studies into the aircraft will continue for the near future. The Subaru Jet, named after the brand of cars that FHI manufactures, has been in the works for several years. If it goes ahead, it would be the company´s first indigenous product since the Fuji FA-200 Aero Subaru single-piston aircraft production line ended in 1986. Apart from supplying components for Boeing passenger aircraft, FHI´s commercial aerospace division also manufactures the main wing portion of the Eclipse 500 very light jet and is working with Hawker Beechcraft on the H4000 midsized business jet. While the company has not decided on the Subaru Jet´s specifications, it is studying aircraft between those two segments.

SeatlePI: Impreza's redesign aimed at expanding appeal
As people often say when they are about to offend every aesthete within earshot, I'm no art critic. But here goes: Mona Lisa was no Monica Bellucci. Even so, you would never fiddle with the Mona Lisa's looks, never send her out for a whiter smile and some dermabrasion. It's the same with the Subaru Impreza WRX. With apologies to its zealous owners -- their vision was apparently too clouded by speed to notice -- the original WRX was one of the homeliest cars around, a budget cracker box in a high-performance Halloween costume. Yet people adored the overachieving underdog.

Motor Trend: First Drive: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX
You might forgive the styling if the 2008 WRX handled anything like its less-ungainly predecessor. Subaru understands that, and has resharpened the WRX's chassis just one year into the new model cycle, while adding 41 horses and 18 lb-ft, making it a better match for the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart's 237 hp and 253 lb-ft.
Popular Mechanics: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Test Drive: 265 Horses Comes Half-Step Closer to STi Awesomeness
It's tough playing second fiddle to a fire-breathing, rally-bred superstar like the Subaru WRX STi. Well, that's changed a bit now.

Business Week: Subaru Forester: Big, Rugged, and Economical
Early indications are that Subaru's redesigned five-passenger Forester will be a big hit, with U.S. sales soaring 49% in April, 66% in May, and 41% in June. It's not hard to figure out why. The new Forester is bigger, roomier, and has a nicer interior than the old one, yet its gas mileage is about the same, and its starting price is nearly $1,200 lower than the old model's, even though it comes standard with traction and stability control.
Nihon Car: Subaru Legacy S402, the Sports Sedan by STi

After teasing us with a series of shadowy pictures, Subaru fully revealed its newest crossover, the 2009 Exiga. We first saw the Exiga - albeit in concept form - at the 2007 Tokyo motor show. Sure, it was gussied up with the typical show car bells and whistles, but we were told the concept wasn't that different than the production vehicle.

iafrica.com: The king returns
Subaru boasts of how its rally-bred super saloon, which has incidentally just turned into a five-door hatch, is more sophisticated and refined than before. As far as we're concerned, it is in almost every respect, but that's not what we're really interested in. Subaru knew this, which is why the company set out to prove this to us by letting us media folk loose in a herd of their new beasts around Zwartkops raceway.

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the maker of Subaru cars, rose the most in two months in Tokyo after Morgan Stanley raised its rating because of better-than-expected sales on new models.
The Broadcaster: Subaru WRX geared to take critics along for the ride
I can't help but feel for Subaru. The purveyor of entertaining, all-wheel drive vehicles seems to be forever locked in combat and disagreement with its sharpest critics, who also happen to be its biggest fans. When the WRX got its first face lift in 2004, the Subaru loyalists hated it. When the design was revised in 2006, they hated it even more.

RedOrbit: Green Manufacturing
TWENTY YEARS AGO, the first joint venture between two Japanese automotive companies completed a new manufacturing facility in Lafayette, replacing green cornfields with a plant that would produce more than 2 million Subaru and Isuzu vehicles. However, few would have guessed that the site would also become a symbol of "green manufacturing" in the United States. Indeed, with all the emphasis on "green" products and lifestyles that seek to help the environment, Indiana's heavy manufacturing industries would seem to be an unlikely place to find such efforts. However, Subaru of Indiana Automotive and a growing number of other manufacturers across the state have been seeing green as a way to both help the planet and improve their bottom lines.

Subaru: 2009 SUBARU FORESTER EARNS HIGHEST RATINGS IN NHTSA NCAP CRASH TESTS
Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that the 2009 Subaru Forester earned the highest rating in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash tests.  The Subaru Forester received five stars in both the frontal and side-impact crash tests for all seating positions.
Jalopnik: Subaru Exiga Teaser Makes Us Want A 7-Seater Crossover... Kinda
Unless we're talking about an AMC Eagle or a Mega Track, we're not huge fans of crossover vehicles. But there's something about this Subaru Exiga that makes it feel acceptable. As we can see from this teaser, the new 7-seater looks to be significantly better looking than the B9 Tribeca.
Car (UK): Subaru Exiga: first pictures
Subaru doesn't like to follow the herd. It's why the Japanese car maker sticks to boxer engines and four-wheel drive where others pick the cheaper, simpler option. And when it comes to MPVs, it's the same story. Not for Subaru the big, boxy people carriers of the Lego building block school of design. This new Exiga, announced today with this sketchy teaser image, is more like a big estate than a sensible seven-seater.
Edmunds Inside Line: Japan-Only Special: Subaru Legacy STI S402
Subaru takes the Legacy to new heights with a new limited-edition STI model that will never be available in the States. Both sedan and wagon versions will be sold, equipped with the well-known Subaru turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine that lays down 282 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. This family car on steroids includes a variety of upgrades to spice up performance capability.
Washington Post: An Old Reliable With All-Wheel Power: 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Premium Sedan
It was the second Sunday of May and the third day of rain. We drove past wet headstones and flowers marking mothers' graves. We were happy. We've had lucky lives -- great parents, now gone; good educations; good jobs and wonderful children. On this day, by comparison, we felt lucky for the most mundane reason. We were in the right car, the 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Premium sedan.
The Independent (UK): The Verdict: Finally, a boxer in the diesel division
It turns up without fail on Subaru's stand at every big motor show. It always looks exactly the same, but I invariably stop in order to admire it for a few minutes. It's a full-scale mock-up of Subaru's characteristic four-wheel drive power train in which the main components, including the boxer engines to which the company is so attached, are arranged in-line.
Auto123 (CA): 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5X Limited Review
Sized between an Impreza and a Legacy, the Forester has always been a versatile vehicle, yet it has never been a beauty, especially with its 2006 nose job. It's been function over form for the ten years of its existence, that is, until now. For the 2009 model year, the Forester gets a major redesign and is much more attractive. Okay, its exterior styling isn't drop-dead gorgeous, but the wagonesque SUV is no longer a wallflower. Svelte and muscular, with ribbed front and rear fenders, dual exhausts and higher stance, the new Forester draws many more stares on the road.
WTOV9 : Safety Improving In New Cars, SUVs
It may not look like cars change much on the outside from year to year, but crash testing is proving otherwise. In testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 37 cars, minivans and SUVs recieved the agency's Top Safety Pick award for 2008, a nearly three-fold increase from 2007's 13.
Motor Trend: STI tunes the Subaru Legacy for Japanese market
Subaru's STI performance arm has worked their tuning magic on their latest special edition called the Legacy STI S402 that unfortunately for us, will only be available to customers in Japan. Featured on the Legacy STI S402 is a slightly detuned version of the 2.5-liter turbo boxer engine used by U.S. and European-spec Impreza STI's that produces 282 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque.

National Post (CA): Road Test: 2009 Subaru Legacy PZEV Wagon
For 2009, Subaru has introduced super-clean versions of its Legacy and Outback models. Looking at these cars reveals little out of the ordinary. In this case, the test car is a conventional-looking Legacy station wagon. Only the partial zero-emissions vehicle (PZEV) badges on the tailgate and the ones embroidered into the front floor mats speak to the differences. In all other respects, it is a "normal" car.
Groovy Green: Hypermiling in My Old Subaru…or "Life in the Slow Lane"
Well the price of gas has hit the magic $4/gal mark for regular in Syracuse, well, $3.999 to be exact. After the last fill up, I decided that I was sick of getting about 20 mpg or about 260 miles per fill up out of my old Subaru (a 2000 Forester). I decided to start trying out some basic techniques - I wouldn’t let the engine rev above 2000 rpm if I could help it. I would maintain a speed of no more than 3 miles over the speed limit, and no more than 60 mph. I wouldn’t accelerate into red lights, and would not idle the engine (except at traffic lights).I’ve traveled 245 miles since my last fill up, and the results so far are promising.
Autoblog: Subaru Outback wears its boxer diesel engine on the outside
While automakers spend huge amounts of money paying marketing firms to come up with memorable advertising campaigns, sometimes something relatively simple does the job just as well. Take this Subaru Outback. Dreamed up by Stan Palmer Sales of Carlisle, a Subaru dealership in the U.K., this particular Outback appears to be see-through and was developed to promote the marque's new diesel boxer engine, the first such engine in the world. An image in a Subaru brochure was snapped with an eight megapixel camera, blown up and plastered onto the full-sized car.
Motor Trend: UK dealer creates 'transparent' Subaru Outback diesel
Never one to follow the herd, for years Subaru has built cars that are just a little different from typical automotive fare. The 1989 Justy employed the first CVT transmission in a U.S. production car, and the exotic styling of the 1992 - 97 SVX still turns heads today. Now to promote the first ever boxer diesel engine offered in a passenger car, a Subaru dealer in the UK has created a special "see-through" Outback that shows off the automaker's mechanical innovation to the world.
Scripps: Check out the Subaru Forester
If Subaru didn't invent the crossover sport utility vehicle, it was right there at the category's dawn. In the 1970s, the Japanese manufacturer made a discovery: It's engines lent themselves to four-wheel drive cars. Subaru had been dedicated to the horizontally opposed engine, or boxer, in which the cylinders lie flat, feet-to-feet, on both sides of the crankshaft. Meanwhile, many automakers configure their engines to stand up or lean, in conventional in-line or V formats.

Cars? Those would be the five compact SUVs we've parked nearby and are still occasionally popping and ticking to each other after pounding out evaluation loops, which have included swift climbs up Angeles Crest Highway, swifter descents, and several miles of choppy concrete freeway. Pull up a chair and listen in.
Nasdaq: AUTO REVIEW: 2009 Subaru Forester -- 4,590 Granola Bars

Adweek: Love: Does It Change Everything?
Considering the Japanese automaker has changed taglines and agencies numerous times in the last decade, you might be wondering what "makes a Subaru a Subaru." Turns out it's a four-letter word: love. In its first campaign for the brand, Carmichael Lynch has merely appended the previous agency's tagline with what makes the world go 'round.I give the CL folks credit for hanging on to the DDB phrase. By providing some continuity it shows they're putting the brand ahead of ego. This will be a multimedia campaign, although only the TV spots and a print ad were ready for review at press time. The TV work is solid, kindhearted, old-school stuff -- with a karmic twist. It will certainly appeal to those already enchanted with the brand. The question is if it's too mild to convert those who ain't feelin' it.
AdGabber: Jiggling Breasts Give Way to Jiggling Bellies in Subaru Commercial

Autoblog: Subaru Exiga heading to production, teaser leaks out
We received word from a little birdie last week that Subaru was gearing up to release its brand-new Exiga into journalist's hands in Japan. Auto Express (UK): Ultimate Evo and Impreza ready for battle
Two of Japan’s giants are set for a showdown. Mitsubishi and Subaru are unleashing hardcore versions of their four-wheel-drive flagships. Feast your eyes on the Lancer Evolution X MR and Impreza WRX STi Spec C. The Evo X MR – the badge stands for Mitsubishi Racing – gets a host of cosmetic upgrades, with extra vents and air intakes on the nose to improve cooling. There’s also a revised rear wing and side skirts, plus black alloys. The MR packs around 305bhp – that’s 20bhp more than the entry-level Evo X – which puts it on a par with the standard Impreza WRX STi.

Gas Money: Toyota, Subaru venture highly anticipated
So I was out in my old rust-bucket Supra on Loch Raven Drive this past weekend, trying to coax a little smoke from the rear tires. I revved it out to four grand, dumped the clutch and launched nice and clean, with no wheelspin whatsoever. But I could smell burning clutch through my open sunroof.
Detroit News: Hunky little STI muscle car is Subaru's brightest star
Not long ago, hatchback automobiles were about as welcome in the United States as zits on a teenager's nose. Never mind that they are way more functional than equivalent notchback sedans. They were reviled just the same. But times and tastes change, and now hatches are proliferating in batches, except that they now come with aliases like sport wagon and crossover. More surprisingly, they are now showing up in high-performance versions like the Volkswagen GTI and R32, the Mazdaspeed 3, the Audi A3 and the subject here, the 2008 Subaru WRX STI.

US News Ranking and Reviews: 2009 Subaru Forester Named Top Safety Pick
According to the IIHS, achieving the highest rating is tough because the award is intended to drive continued safety improvements."  The IIHS makes the award more difficult to earn every year to push the auto industry to continue making safer cars.  For instance, for 2009 the Institute required that vehicles offer electronic stability control to be considered for the award.  That's a brand new requirement, but stability control is standard equipment on the Forester.
Motor Trend: 2009 Subaru Forester named IIHS Top Safety Pick
If you're in the market for a safe car, you could do a lot worse than the 2009 Subaru Forester, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The redesigned Forester has been recognized by the IIHS as a Top Safety Pick by earning the highest crash safety rating in front, side, and rear impact tests, as well as featuring an electric stability control system - all requirements for qualification.
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: NEW CRASH TESTS: SUBARU FORESTER IS TOP SAFETY PICK
The redesigned 2009 Subaru Forester, a small SUV, earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's TOP SAFETY PICK award. Winners afford superior overall crash protection among the vehicles in their class. To qualify, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control. Criteria to win are tough because the award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as top crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control, which is standard on the Forester.
Autoblog: Subaru to stop making Kei Cars
Last week's announcement that Toyota wants to raise its stake in Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy Industries looked to have no down side. Subaru gets $300 million with which to build a new factory, Toyota gets greater access to FHI's high tech batteries for hybrids, and both get to build the affordable RWD/AWD coupe that we're all waiting for.
North Bay Nugget: 2009 Subary Forester; No matter how it's categorized, the new Forester is bigger, better and better looking
Is the 2009 Subaru Forester really a sport-utility vehicle, or simply a wagon-bodied underling? The Japanese-based car company is cautiously hedging its bets on that question. Literature distributed during the Forester's reveal at January's Detroit Auto Show referred to the styling as "more SUV-like." That modest admission seems to indicate that Subaru feels it deserves to join the larger Tribeca as a junior member in the company's sport-utility grouping.

Auto123.com (CA): A WRX for rational drivers
The redesigned 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX disappointed, if not shocked, some of the brand's hardcore fans. But the automaker had to see it coming. After all, the move to appeal to a wider audience was a risky one, as it could alienate a legion of buyers and admirers who literally grew up idolizing this model, which was launched about 15 years ago.

Telegraph (UK): Subaru Forester: Reason to be cheerful
First drives of 4x4s and family cars telegraph.co.uk/motoring When I was a child, the family of my friend Ruby drove about in a Forester. It was largely occupied by Ruby's dog, a springer spaniel with a serious anger management issue. Ruby's mum drove Ruby and the snarling springer spaniel about, the heating always on full blast, windows closed and steamed up with the heat, dog spittle oozing slowly down the inside, making tracks in the condensation. The car reeked of wet dog, that cloying, sweet smell that makes you nauseous. I always turned down the offer of a lift to school, and Foresters have always meant "utility" in the basest sense of the word since.
Business Week: Toyota: Tighter with Subaru, Daihatsu
When Toyota Motor bought into Fuji Heavy Industries, owner of the Subaru brand, in October, 2005 (BusinessWeek.com, 10/5/05), industry watchers speculated whether the Japanese auto giant could do better with the partnership than General Motors. At the time, GM ended a six-year relationship with Fuji Heavy, selling its 20% stake for $740 million. Developments on Apr. 10 suggest that Toyota is right on track. Speaking at a Tokyo press conference, Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe, flanked by counterparts from Fuji Heavy and Daihatsu Motor, Toyota's minicar maker, announced closer ties between the three companies.

Automobile: 2009 Subaru Forester
Of the modern-era Subarus, the Forester has been the model that most closely reflects the character that the brand was built on: inexpensive, capable, utilitarian, slightly unconventional, and unconcerned with appearances. A Subaru among Subarus, this grungy earth child has been happily chugging along on the crunchy fringe of the compact SUV market. For 2009, the Forester has undergone a redesign that has made it larger, more SUV-like, and, well, more normal. And although the new Forester looks a lot different from the previous model, it manages to retain many of its predecessors' strengths while expanding its appeal.

Niagara Falls Review: Looking sharp; 2009 Subaru Forester
Subarus have always tended to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary in their design changes. OK, there was that business with the first Tribeca, but, generally, quantum leaps are not part of the corporate thinking.Luckily for fans of the marque - and I should 'fess right up that I personally own a Forester - the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy is alive and well. But there's a maturing process afoot. A Subaru exec, talking at the launch of this third-generation Forester, likened the 2009 version to the highschool prom girl who suddenly becomes a woman

The Scotsman (UK): Diesel do nicely for families
WITH our roads and weather, the ideal Scottish family car is probably an estate car with four-wheel drive and, given the higher fuel prices outside the Central Belt, preferably a diesel engine. Until now the choice has basically boiled down to either the Skoda Fabia Scout or, for badge snobs, the latest Audi A4 Avant, which for an extra seven grand offers a marginal improvement in performance and economy but will impress the neighbours no end. But that's all about to change thanks to Subaru, which now has a diesel engine that adds economy to its traditional strengths of all-weather performance and, so long as you change the oil and filters, near invincibility.

Sport Compact Car: Project WRX V.08 - Still Kicking: Our Subaru Impreza WRX, back in black
For better or worse there has been a large amount of talk surrounding the newly updated 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX. The biggest complaint from enthusiasts? That it got soft. Gone are the bulging hood scoop, muscular fender flares and semi-aggressive face of the last generation WRX. What we have now is a much more conservative WRX that Subaru hopes will convince millions (or is it thousands?) of buyers to pick up a non-turbo base Impreza instead of a Camry or Corolla.
News.com (AU): New Forester on the money
Forester is the most highly decorated Subaru, notching up sales of 105,000 in Australia since the first generation spawned the compact SUV fad in 1997. In those first few years the Forester had few peers, racking up a host of awards and was unbeatable in the Queensland Car of the Year awards co-hosted by The Courier-Mail and the RACQ. It managed such award-winning pedigree on the back of an unflappable reputation to fuse on- and off-road manners with clever packaging. The third-generation Forester is open for business today – and Subaru is holding on to those core values that have made the wagon such an unmitigated success
Cars.com: 2009 Subaru Forester
In its first full redesign since the 2003 model year, the Subaru Forester has moved closer to the mainstream than some fans might have hoped it would. The old model's boxy charm has been toned down, and what's left is a compact SUV whose driving dynamics are on par with some of the nimbler players in this segment. A few Forester diehards may cry foul, but I suspect the changes will widen the car's appeal to the market in general. The SUV remains as practical as ever, but now boasts enough refinement to merit serious consideration from anyone shopping the latest Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4.
King5.com: Subaru rethinks styling in the 2009 Forester
If you're like me you know a number of people who own Subaru Foresters. It's practically the official car of the Pacific Northwest. Many of us like our cars, but Forester owners seem to love theirs. Not just love, I’m talking L-O-V-E. It could be the all-wheel drive (every Subie has it), or the utility that comes from putting a big box on wheels. Styling?  Hmmm … Even owners describe their Foresters as having more of an "inner sense of beauty." My friend Joan says hers is the automotive equivalent of sensible shoes. She’s not alone. Research by J.D. Powers finds that 42 percent of shoppers that considered a Forester took a pass because of the design. I suppose it’s better to be loved for who you are than what you look like, huh
Autocar (UK): Subaru WRX diesel for Britain
A senior brand insider has revealed to Autocar that Subaru UK wants to sell a hot diesel-powered version of the Impreza WRX in the UK. Subaru’s new diesel boxer engine, currently only on offer in the Legacy, is likely to be offered in the Impreza in its current state of tune before the end of the year – and Subaru has already hinted that more powerful versions of the engine will follow.
Auto123: 2009 Subaru Forester First Impressions
"We may be making a huge mistake with this off-road car," feared Subaru President and CEO, Mr. Katsuhiro Yokoyama when Subaru launched its first generation Forester 12-years ago. Such fear quickly evaporated as pragmatic outdoorsy types quenched their thirst for a frugal vehicle to handle all of their recreational needs.
US News: 2009 Subaru Forester Wins Over Press
Motor Trend drives the 2009 Subaru Forester, and reports, "The latest, third generation of Subaru's cult 'ute has dramatically pulled out its earplugs to its naysayers and made the changes that had to be made."  The 2009 Forester is larger than any of its predecessors, and "without a doubt, the majority of Forester shoppers are going to do a little jig when they see the greater capacity."  Despite the larger size, "the Forester's always delightful steering feel" is still present.  On the road, the two engine options "nicely balance the Forester's roughly 100 pound weight gain."  In addition, the Forester boasts "significant new safety features at base prices lowered from $700 to $1200, depending on powertrain and trim."
Motor Trend: First Drive: 2009 Subaru Forester
Among its peers, Subaru's Forester has always been the "character" among its compact sport/ute fellows. You know, funny and erudite and all that, but a bit eccentric in a suspiciously self-conscious sort of way. Styling? Frumpy. Make that, proudly frumpy. And forget about suggesting it should have a more refined engine note. In Subaruville, roarty is music to the ears. Had Hollywood ever made a movie of the Forester's life, bow-tied George Plimpton would've been perfect for the part.
Jalopnik:
2009 Subaru Forester, Part One
Is it kismet? I suspect so, as over a few short weeks, a couple of themes have begun to emerge in our Jalopnik Reviews. First, Hardigree gets his hands on a Dodge Caliber SRT4 and loses a tire. Not two weeks later, I voyage to sublime Laguna Beach, and then to Catalina Island for some hoontastic off-roadin' in the 2009 Subaru Forester, and I kill not one, but two Yokohamas. Then Siler, too, visits the Golden West and lays down rubber in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, only to discover that the definitive sport conveyance of reckless youth feels a tad out of place on freeways, as opposed to twisting backroads. Hello! I experience ditto while slinging the new Forester around on rocky, rutted, ill-mannered, road-like pathways, later discovering that the vehicle goes all petulant on regular asphalt byways. Flurry of coincidences? Hope not. I like to think there's a higher power at work.
2009 Subaru Forester, Part Two
Overall: ***
Not a perfect update to Subaru's most versatile vehicle--for many, the flagship of the brand--but a definite improvement that serves up outstanding value while coming off as more capable than the competition when the going gets rugged. Should expand the demo and appeal to a younger customer without sacrificing Subaru's legendary character.

Cardomain: When Is a Soft Roader Not a Soft Roader?
When soft roader in question is as complete and competent as is the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester. In a class populated by posers and wannabees, Subaru has literally taken the higher road with a completely new Forester that raises the bar in the increasingly competitive small CUV or crossover utility category. While some call these vehicles soft roaders, because their off-road abilities are so compromised, the Forester proves conclusively that this need not be the case; here’s a compact CUV that can play with the big boys.
Cars.com: First Drive: 2009 Subaru Forester
Despite being 6 years old, the outgoing Subaru Forester is still a Cars.com Best Bet. Naturally, we had high hopes for the redesigned model that debuted at January’s Detroit auto show. Subaru invited journalists to Southern California to put the SUV through its paces on- and off-road, and I can attest that the updates keep it as competitive as ever.
DriveSouth (NZ):Subaru takes top AA award
The Subaru Impreza STI was the supreme winner of the AA motoring excellence awards. They also provide the New Zealand public with an independent assessment to assist with car purchases.
Jalopnik: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, part one
I drove the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI backwards. Not in the reverse gear sense, but leaving Palm Springs it's only a very short climb up a straight, steep highway before you get to the kind of roads we car guys can usually only dream about. As state route 74 climbs up to Pinyon Crest, overlooking the Anza-Borrego state park, the road twists and turns, looping back on itself over and over again as it forms tight hairpins. Cliffs rise dramatically on one side and drop thousands of feet on the other.
National Post (CA): Road Test: 2008 Subaru WRX Sedan
Pity poor Subaru. Like Rodney Dangerfield, it can't get no respect. When the original WRX hit our shores in 2002, it was thought an ugly little beast, with a stubby little trunk and bugged-out eyes. Mainstream journalists and consumers liked its performance, but they distanced themselves from its looks. Too far out of the conventional, said they. Contrarians, as they always do, embraced what polite society rejected and made Subaru's little warthog a sporting cult classic. Sales may never have threatened the Civic's, but they were steady, and those who bought into the whole "so ugly it's beautiful" thing sure were loyal.
The Expositor: Small, AWD car is a slam dunk; Subaru's automatic is simply among the best at any price
AUnique Selling Proposition is every marketer's dream - an attribute that your product and your product alone has, which can then be flogged to the public. Subaru traditionally has had two USPs: One is the flat horizontally opposed engine, shared in the car business only with Porsche. Nice bedfellow, although if the concept's advantages were so blatantly obvious, you'd think it would be universal. The main claimed benefit (lower centre of gravity, hence improved handling) is very difficult to measure, let alone detectable by most drivers. Subaru's second USP is four-wheel drive, standard on every Subaru sold in this country for years. Even that is no longer unique, as just about every carmaker has at least some four-wheel-drive models. It is rare in the lower price classes, however, so if your radar is set on a small car with four-wheel drive, the all-new Subaru Impreza might be the only game in town.
Easier.com: Diesel at the double for Subaru
The arrival of the boxer diesel engine is likely to double UK sales of Subaru cars by 2010. Distributor IM Group is targeting 15,000 sales by 2010 – more than twice 2007’s level of around 7,000 units.
A major growth spurt is expected this year, as Subaru enters “the busiest period in its history”, said a spokesman. Subaru’s UK sales target for 2008 is 8,500 cars – itself a big leap on 2007. The all-new Impreza was launched in late 2007, and the first boxer diesel-equipped Legacy and Outback models are now on their way to customers.

Daily Times: Four wheel excellence: Subaru WRX
Even before Subaru introduced the vaunted WRX in 2001, it earned a reputation for all-wheel-drive excellence and durability that was seemingly endless. When the company became an all-AWD brand in the 1990s, people thought executives were crazy. Until sales rocketed upward. In no time, Subaru went from a well-respected automaker to a leader in performance. Completely redesigned for 2008, the WRX demonstrates why Subaru owners are pretty smart people.

c|net Reviews: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI
Last year we tested the 2008 Subaru WRX and were left hoping the STI version would make up for the suburbanization of the model. Well, the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI arrived in our garage and set all our worries to rest. From our first look at the STI parked in our garage, we could tell that it was a pit bull compared with the cocker spaniel-like standard WRX. The smooth sides of the standard WRX get bulked out by meaty fenders on the STI, wide enough to make room for the 245/40R18 Dunlop Sport 600 summer tires wrapped around 18 inch rims. Big Brembro brakes sit in the rims, and special vents sit behind the front fenders ready to bleed off excess heat.
Inquirer.net (PH): Be foolproof vs unscrupulous casa mechanics
TIMES are hard, And some carmakers may be neglecting their technicians-the heart and soul of the casa business — but does that give a struggling or underpaid casa mechanic a license to, well, fool you? Let’s turn the question around: Will you give the opportunistic mechanic a good enough reason to put one over you with your cruelty or gullibility?
Business Week: Audi: Pedal to the Metal
Subaru’s oddball appeal makes it an attractive alternative to plain-vanilla import brands. Similarly, Audi buyers pride themselves on being independent thinkers. They’re not willing to pay a premium for a mere (read: Mercedes or BMW) hood ornament. They don’t like to see themselves coming and going. For Audi to make such a big jump in sales in such a short time, it’s going to have to mess with that core, niche-player appeal.
Mother Proof: Subaru Would Make a Great State Car
I recall sitting in Mr. Anderson’s elementary school class wondering who the genius was who decided every state needed its own bird, color, flower, song and tree. That bitterness likely stemmed from the fact that I had to memorize all the states, their capitals and, in some cases, their state motto. Little did I know then how easy I had it; these days, at least 20 states have designated a state amphibian, and of the 27 states that have designated a state beverage, 18 of them honored milk. Pennsylvania even named the Slinky its state toy. All that got me wondering about what kind of car my state would choose as its official vehicle. After a round of completely unscientific polling and observation, I concluded that Colorado’s state car would be a Subaru.
Consumer Reports: New Car Preview: Subaru Forester
CR's Take: This is the Forester's first full redesign since its 1998 debut. Since then, the market has changed and grown while the Forester remained a humble but competitive entry. The new one finally looks more like an SUV than a wagon. The redesign brings more room, especially in the rear seat; that shortcoming has always been the Forester's Achilles heel. We're happy to see that the Forester retains its practical squared-off body and compact dimensions.

And there you have, in essence, the difference between the last version of the WRX and the new one. The former was more aggressive, while the new model takes the performance genes from that vehicle and repackages them in a variety of configurations designed to appeal to younger drivers on their way up in the world.

Chicago Sun-Times: The original crossover..Subaru Outback: Wagons ho’
The Subaru Outback is the Rodney Dangerfield of the crossover segment – no respect. Crossovers are THE hot segment as growth has been meteoric, approached only by the dramatic sales growth of hybrids … at least after each spike in gas prices. Subaru launched the crossover category back in the fall of 1994 when they introduced the Outback for the 1995 model year. Back then crossovers were actually called hybrids because they blended a passenger car unibody platform with SUV attributes like above-average ground clearance, a command-seating position and all-wheel-drive traction.

Automobile Magazien: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI
Does this mean that the STI has gone soft? No way. Ignore the complaints you'll no doubt hear about body roll and understeer - no one ever said the STI was a track car. Go beat an STI mercilessly on some insane mountain road, and you'll understand. You'll hear the subtle gear whine, you'll notice the endless suspension travel, and if you're patient enough to work through the turbo lag, you'll carve through bumpy, off-camber, blind corners at a rate of speed that would make a WRC driver smile. Sure, there are cars-especially in this lofty price range - that out-this or out-that the STI, but few have as much personality. In a world where so many cars, including Subaru's own WRX, are turning into lifeless appliances, it's the personality that counts.
USA Today: It's waste not, want not at super green Subaru plant
Subaru's giant assembly plant here is on track to produce 180,000 cars this year. Yet the automaker pledges that virtually none of the waste generated from its eye-popping output will wind up in a dump.
Copper-laden slag left over from welding is collected and shipped to Spain for recycling. Styrofoam forms encasing delicate engine parts are returned to Japan for the next round of deliveries. Even small protective plastic caps are collected in bins to be melted down to make something else. All told, Subaru says 99.8% of the plant's refuse is recycled or reused so it doesn't go to a landfill. That includes a small portion, about 5%, that goes to a waste-to-energy plant that burns waste to make steam to heat Indianapolis' downtown.

Jamaica Gleaner: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX Paradigm shift
Building a car is not an easy task. Creating anything for market is a time-consuming, exhaustive process, let alone something as complex and as diverse as a motor vehicle. Mass appeal cars are market-driven instruments of profitability, and are the manufacturer's bread and butter.
Failure here usually means the beginning of the end for the manufacturer, so great pains are taken to ensure that the model is successful. Mass appeal cars do not have the luxury of clean-sheet engineering. Profitability is the watchword.
Halo cars serve a different purpose. A halo car is not designed by a committee. Its sole purpose is to market the rest of the line by the consumer buzz created from how good it is. It is expensive to make and market, and usually sells at a loss to the manufacturer because of the amount of engineering that went into it (which is why they make so few of them). It represents clean-heat engineering, where the engineer's creativity is usually unbridled.
Auto123 (CA): 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX 4-door Road Test
To tell you the truth, I'm somewhat biased toward the Impreza WRX. I love its ideal dose of power, solid handling and comfortable ride. Plus, the fully redesigned WRX is decidedly stylish with its new dress. For 2008, engineers aimed to make this sporty Subaru more civilized. Obviously, a few compromises had to be made...
Auto Express (UK): Subaru Forester: Japanese firm aims to inject quality and desirability to dependable Forester

NZ Herald: Diesel debut for maker's boxer engine
It's been a long time coming, but Subaru has launched its horizontally opposed (or "boxer") diesel engine. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's intended mainly for the compression-ignition crazy European market, and it's unlikely to land in New Zealand until next year
Telegraph (UK): Boxing clever: Subaru Legacy

Mercury News: Rally Rivals: Two of a kind that are, for the most part, too close to call.
The all-out war between international rally-racing titans Subaru and Mitsubishi spills onto the streets of North America this spring. Both automakers are unleashing hot new models that build on the success and strengths of their predecessors, and now we have the dirt on them (pardon the pun). The Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution are stars in a class of two vehicles that combines the practicality of four doors with high-horse turbocharged engines powering all four wheels. Why? Just ask a rally fan.
Stuff (NZ): Subaru's diesel worth celebrating

Car and Driver: 2008 Subaru Legacy, Outback 2.0D - First Drive Review: Feisty boxer diesel a first for a passenger car.
To Subaru, it makes all the sense in the world. The automaker's core technology is a horizontally opposed boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, and this unique drivetrain layout has made Subaru distinct for 43 years. Recognizing sales would never grow substantially in Europe without a diesel engine, Subaru faced an interesting challenge: Could it radically reinforce its existing engine architecture for diesel duty without making it too large or heavy to fit in a car?

Further rumours are that Toyota may return to WRC with the new Celica.

This month, Porter begins his two-year stint as chairman of the Subaru National Dealer Advisory Board.

Wall Street Journal: Still No Frills on Subaru's Cult Car
When the Subaru Impreza WRX made its U.S. debut in 2001, it seemed to herald a new era for car enthusiasts. An affordable performance machine that ran circles around cars costing twice the money, the "Scooby" was akin to a modern BMW 2002. The WRX presented itself as a smarter approach to going fast than anything else on the road, thanks to its ingenious all-wheel-drive system and turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Each new car came with a membership in the Sports Car Club of America, encouraging owners to get involved in competitive rally racing. Subaru was, and still is, a major sponsor of rallying, where drivers race against the clock along treacherous winding roads.

Both models are capable of transporting five passengers comfortably.

The latest Impreza comes in from the stylistic fringe and runs in the heart of the segment.

Subaru will launch its first diesel models - 2.0TD versions of the Legacy Sport Tourer and Outback - to the UK next month.

Subaru Legacy 34 - 2.0TD Sport Tourer.

UK and European Subaru sales have been harmed for some time by the fact that the company has not had a diesel engine to offer. The problem has been that Subaru is absolutely committed to a "boxer" engine layout for its self-designed cars (not including the new Justy, which is a rebadged Daihatsu Sirion).
LATimes: Its refining moment
The car you see on this page is subtle. No, seriously, ignoring the blown-out front fender deltoids, the heinous sacrilege of sport tires and roof-extending rear wing the size of a snowboard, and ignoring the Talmudic specificity of the name -- Subaru Impreza WRX STI -- there is a lot of nuance here. It's nuance fired out of a howitzer at point-blank range into your face, but you could still easily miss it. Yes, that's what impresses me after a rib-bruising half-hour with this 305-hp, all-wheel-drive samurai license-killer: its deep allusiveness and indirection. It's practically Pynchon-like.

Just Auto: UK: Subaru launches first diesels
The new engine is initially only for Europe and offered only in the Legacy Sports Tourer and Outback crossover models. The Boxer Diesel meets Euro4 emission standards thanks to oxidation catalytic converters, a particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation. Top speed for the Legacy 2.0TD R Sports Tourer is 126mph with a 0-60 mph time of 8.5 seconds. Fuel economy is 39.8/56.5 and 49.6 mpg on the EC combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 151g/km.
Dallas Morning News: STI gives WRX va-va-voom
Remember how pudgy and plain your old girlfriend looked at the last high school reunion, as if time had blurred her lines? And then you saw her six months later strutting through some tony downtown restaurant, and she was cut-and-buff, a woman suddenly with muscle and attitude and presence. That's the way I view the '08 Subaru WRX STI.
The Californian.com: WRX now an adult
After many years outside the United States dominating the rally car circuit, Subaru brought the Impreza WRX here in 2002 as a niche-market vehicle. Appealing mainly to hard-core car enthusiasts of the younger variety, the WRX was an instant hit and has only grown in popularity and sales since its introduction.
Car and Driver: Tested: 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Sedan - Short Take Road Tests- A mighty imprezzive small car.
Although the Impreza WRX is ever the lovable bad boy who attracts the cheerleaders’ adoration, it is the practical Impreza 2.5i sedan and hatchback that do the heavy lifting in Subaru’s showrooms. For 2008, the Impreza has undergone a makeover—for starters, it’s 4.5 inches longer—although its driveline is little changed

Slashgear: The 4.5hp Subaru Motorized Barstool
I’ve never heard of a bar lacking barstools, but just in case you ever come across one you can drive up on one of these bad boys. If you want you can even park it near the bikes and hang out with the bikers. You can even keep up with them, well up to a whopping 25-30mph. You might even pass a moped or two.
You'd want the 6HP model of course! ..
Wired: Subaru's Impreza WRX STI Gone Soft? Think Again
I've read a good deal lately about the supposed gentrification of the Subaru WRX STI. I've heard that it is somehow softer, less involving, less wicked than the car it replaces. Well, after a week on public roads with one, I'm just not buying it. The old car was quick and visually extraverted, no question about it. But make no mistake, the new STI is more so on both counts. It is, quite simply, a better car in every meaningful way.
IndyStar: Reduce refuse and recycle
"We did this because it was the right thing to do,'' said Tom Easterday, senior vice president of Subaru of Indiana Automotive, referring to SIA's environmental program. And in the process, Easterday said, SIA has reduced waste 45 percent, saving $1 million-plus a year.
CarKeys (UK): New Subaru Forester
Just over eleven years after the launch of the original model, Subaru's new Forester will go on sale in the UK in April.
Driving (CA): Subaru hatchback packs plenty of heat
Subarus have, as a rule, lived in relative obscurity. In many respects, it is because there has always been a touch of the weird and/or wacky. The latest version of Subaru's WRX comes in from left field and runs with its mainstream competition
Daily Record (UK): Angry Lover Rams Ex's Car Then Finds Out He Sold It

New Zealand Herald: Out of the woods and on market
Cabin changes are focused on more practicality. The centre console now houses a storage compartment large enough for a laptop computer and a removable tray than can be used for cellphones and/or portable music players.

Car and Driver: Full Test: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI - Road Tests
No car in this author’s experience provokes single-digit salutes as effectively as the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Numerous hearty flip-offs were received on a plow through central California when the traffic was light, the sightlines were long, and the passing safe and legal. There was honking. There were bared teeth and glaring high-beams. There were seen but unheard epithets as the STI flashed past, just a blue and gold smear against the scenery
Perhaps it’s that brazen British American Tobacco livery (BAT’s 555 cigarette brand was Subaru’s longtime rally sponsor) or the sheer impertinence of such a small, dorky-looking wagonoid running with Porsches. Either way, when you drive an STI, the world prefers that you don’t get out of bed in the morning.
Screw them.
Earthtimes.org: Subaru WRX STI Rides on New Dunlop Performance Tires
A new Dunlop maximum performance tire has been specified for the iconic 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI sports car. Powered by a 305-horsepower, 2.5-liter Subaru boxer engine, the new performance car rides on specially designed Dunlop SP Sport 600 245/40R18 93W summer tires. In fact, every Impreza WRX STI destined for North America rides on Dunlop performance tires.
Automobile.com: Subaru's Electric Car On Sale Next Year
The brand that's just recently announced an electric vehicle available for purchase might be a bit of a surprise candidate. Subaru, best known for their quirky all wheel drive vehicles will be selling a pure electric vehicle microcar by 2009 called the R1e, a vehicle that it has developed with the Tokyo Electric Power Company. In the area that the TEPC operates, there are currently (no pun intended) 150 high-voltage charging stations for electric cars, with plans to expand.
