By now, everyone knows about Toyota and Subaru’s collaboration projects, and how they work well together to create some seriously cool stuff, like the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ, the Toyota GR86 and the Subaru BRZ, and so much more. Subaru’s first PHEV, the Crosstrek PHEV (and also the company’s second try at a Crosstrek hybrid), was made up of Toyota’s leftover hybrid technology. It performed well, but it was expensive at well over $40,000, so it didn’t last very long. With Toyota still sitting at the table, Subaru developed its own hybrid system with Toyota’s influence and created the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid with a true, mechanical all-wheel drive, compared to Toyota’s electronic on-demand system. They put the same system in the new Crosstrek, offered it for a much better price than the last two iterations, and moved on.
