Ah… the five-star Fuji Heavy Industries partnership. The first Japanese car company to use a Japanese name. The trademark of granolas. The head-gasket breakers. Subaru as a company kicked off in America with a silly little 1-and-1/3-seater car that got 61 miles to the gallon in 1958 when fuel efficiency was still ahead of its time. The little Subaru 360 was advertised and proudly proclaimed to the western world in its expensive color TV ads as “cheap and ugly.” It was affordable and simple, and even had suicide doors! Though, back then this wasn’t a good thing.
