ollowing the trend from last year, the American Rally Association presented by DirtFish’s Limited and Naturally Aspirated 4WD National Championship is heating up massively in the wake of the New England Forest Rally. While last year Ele Bardha and Mark Piatkowski battled each other for the title, this year’s top competitors were expected to be Dylan Murcott, Phill Wearn, and Dave Carapetyan, as they entered into the final third of the season. That said, the… Read More →

Before Subaru’s new 3-row Ascent SUV arrived in 2019, making its debut at the 2017 LA Auto Show, any real towing duties were handled by the 2-row Outback with its underwhelming 3,000 lbs. pulling power at the time (it’s now 3,500 lbs.). Not really the right hauler to pull big toys like larger boats and campers – especially from a car brand known for adventure. The 2023 Ascent gains a refresh, and Subaru says its… Read More →

Prodrive, it seems, does it all. Just a little while ago, Prodrive showed off its wild new Subaru WRX. The 400-hp restomod will cost you loads of money, but it’ll also be one hell of a rally car. The company knows a thing or two about racing and has now teamed up with famed designer Ian Callum (of Aston Martin DB7 and Ford Escort RS200 fame) to take on a new racing project for a… Read More →

It’s turning out to be a long hot summer for car shoppers. New cars remain in tight supply due to the ongoing supply chain issues affecting the industry. It’s driving up prices, but not slowing down sales, as buyers are scooping up some cars and trucks as soon as they hit showrooms. One brand in particular is having trouble keeping up with demand. Over the last several years, there’s been an uptick in demand for high-end restomods. I’m talking about fancy new cars made to look like fancy old cars, relegated to super-small-batch status with prohibitive six-figure price tags. Think Porsche 911s “reimagined” by Singer or an Icon 4×4 Ford Bronco — creations revered by rich dudes and wannabe rich dudes who putz around early-morning car shows pontificating about a car’s period correctness (as well as their latest watch purchase and current… Read More →

WHEN Subaru starting selling the Forester a quarter of a century ago, there wasn’t much else like it, writes William Scholes. It really had only two rivals, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV. Together, they formed a trio of trailblazers from Japan which opened eyes to the idea of a ‘crossover’ – namely a family car that was a cross between a hatchback, estate and 4×4. Another Japanese marque, Nissan, came along later with the… Read More →

If the 2022 Subaru Legacy were a character on Star Trek, it would surely be Mr. Spock. It’s eminently logical, prioritizing practical matters like comfort, utility and especially safety, but it also lacks much emotion or passion. It’s the opposite of sleek, but if the popularity of crossovers is any indication, it’s practicality and value that most buyers want, and the Legacy has both of those qualities in abundance. New in 2020, this seventh-generation Legacy… Read More →

You may already know how MotorTrend feels about the new 2022 Subaru WRX based on our First Drive coverage. Subaru’s latest take on its rally-inspired AWD sport sedan is, as senior features editor Jonny Lieberman described it, “fun, if not great, to drive, shockingly competent at sticking to pavement, practical, and a true performance bargain. ” When we inquired at that drive event, the Subaru representatives were surprisingly tight-lipped regarding a 0-60-mph estimate. Not only… Read More →

For the second time this season, Brandon Semenuk has passed Ken Block on the final stage of a rally for the win. But he’s not sure he can do it for a third time. The first time was when Block hit a deer on 100 Acre Wood. Now, after a dust-filled stage on which Brandon had a clean road, he had the edge to pull 0.9 seconds ahead of the Hoonigan Hyundai for a last-minute… Read More →
