First Drive: 2019 Forester Is Every Bit As Good As Subaru Said It Would Be

We’re sure there are a lot of apprehensive Subaru fans reluctantly reading this new Forester drive report, disappointed to learn that the Japanese company has ousted the model’s 6-speed manual and turbo from the latest version while taking a conservative approach with its all-new restyling and adding a mild hybrid specification. But there is hope. The new 2019 model we drove at the Izu Cycle Sports Center south of Tokyo last week is better than… Read More →

The winding road to old Jerome in the 2018 Toyota 86 coupe

Great driving roads take on so many variations, but what most have in common are great scenery spiced with challenging curves and elevations. One of my favorite driving roads in Arizona is the twisting climb of State Route 89A as it crosses over Mingus Mountain from Prescott Valley to the old mining town of Jerome. The 12-mile trek is a favorite of motorcyclists and sports car drivers. It’s loaded with hairpin turns and sweeping overlooks… Read More →

Subaru EyeSight Father Returns in Stereo Vision

ITD Lab, a 20-person startup based here, is pitching “Intelligent Stereo Camera (ISC)” technology for applications ranging from ADAS, autonomous vehicles, and drones to construction machines and industrial robots. ITD Lab’s secret weapon is CTO Keiji Saneyoshi, a father of Subaru’s EyeSight. Saneyoshi was the principal engineer behind Subaru’s original stereo vision system, “Stereo Range Imager.” Saneyoshi’s team at Subaru then developed the first driver-assist system to use only stereo cameras to detect objects such… Read More →

2019 Subaru Ascent First Drive

t’s been almost five years since Subaru had a midsize SUV in its lineup, creating a void for the brand’s loyal customers seeking a three-row family-friendly crossover. That’s all changed with the introduction of the new 2019 Subaru Ascent, which goes on sale this summer. The Ascent is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) sends power to all four… Read More →

2019 Subaru Ascent first drive review: Finally, a proper 3-row SUV

You might remember the Tribeca, Subaru’s first stab at a three-row crossover SUV. New for the 2006 model year, it stumbled out of the gates with its controversial looks, soldiering on as a slow seller until being axed in 2014. An uncharacteristic one-and-done dud for Subaru, few people lamented the model’s demise. Of course, from failures often come grand successes, and with America’s midsize SUV market once again a hot commodity, Subaru is reinvesting in… Read More →
