The crossover market is bursting at the seams will all sorts of jacked-up vehicles that were once superminis, SUVs or 4x4s. One sector that has held firm is that of the beefed-up family estate car, so we decided to compare one of the most old school examples with a new player. The Subaru Outback represents something like four generations, as well as two decades, of 4×4 authenticity and experience. WRC championships, all-wheel drive experience –… Read More →

Why did Subaru drop the 6-speed manual on the U.S. models? It’s because of tighter fuel mileage regulations here in the U.S. So Subaru needed to drop the 6-speed standard gearbox to meet the more stringent fuel-mileage regulations here in the U.S. market. Subaru is one of those special brands in the sense that, like Hyundai, it enjoys a very loyal clientele. While this may be surprising about Hyundai, it’s less so with Subaru considering that all of the brand’s vehicles—except the BRZ—come with all-wheel drive. This full-time symmetrical system is one of the best of its kind, so it’s easy to understand why families that have already owned a good wagon robust enough for cold temperatures and… Read More →

The first thing you notice when you start the tour at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Ind., is the noise. Even with earplugs snugly stuffed into your skull the deafening sound of the factory permeates your eardrums with its constant roar, and it does not cease until you exit into the lobby. Everywhere you turn there is danger, as autonomously operated robots zip by beneath four-story stamping machines that spit-out entire Outback halves, all while forklifts and trolly cars… Read More →

I’ve spent a lot of time in Subaru WRX STIs lately, and it’s turned out to be enlightening. My first encounter came in British Columbia, where I drove a 2016 WRX STI in the top-level Sport-tech trim from Vancouver to Whistler, along the Sea to Sky Highway. It marked my first visit to the area, and that drive will forever be one of my most memorable. The car’s beautifully balanced 2.5 L, four-cylinder boxer engine… Read More →

Americans just can’t seem to get their fill of Subarus for some reason. The Japanese automaker, that for years was written-off as this funky car manufacturer which only made off-road station wagons for Vermont-based art teachers and Paul Hogan, has since received a tidal wave of positive press for its quality and affordability, which boosted demand to such a level that no one (including Subaru) could have ever predicted. The Cheat Sheet reported on Subaru’s unbridled growth a few months back, when news that… Read More →

With sunnier weather abound and an 18,000-mile service complete (oil and filter change, tire rotation, and multi-point inspection), it was time to ratchet up the STI’s spiciness. After receiving Subaru’s blessing, I went about tastefully modifying “my” STI, as most real owners would. Just as I mimicked the iconic Spec C Type RA-R’s look a few months prior, I again took inspiration from a famous WRX STI: Subaru’s class-dominating NBR 24H Challenge racer. Power isn’t… Read More →

Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd said more than 100 cars that were imported from Japan and were awaiting customs clearance in a warehouse had been damaged by broken windows. The warehouse, which does not belong to Fuji Heavy, is about 2 km (1.2 miles) from the blast site, it said. Read More →

Professional rally driver Ken Block’s series of Gymkhana videos has proved popular, inspiring several spoofs and imitations. Now, retail shoe store Famous Footwear has released its take on the phenomenon. Titled “Momkhana,” the video follows a mother and her two kids as they drift the family minivan from the suburbs to the shoe store. Read More →
