Toyota’s redesigned RAV4 small SUV got the worst-possible score in an especially demanding crash test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2013 RAV4 got a “poor” ranking in what the IIHS calls the “front small overlap” test. Read More →

Let’s talk about mud, you guys. It’s bad news. Not only can it ruin that one nice pair of pants you have, it can also wash away your car in a filthy, gushing torrent. Just ask John Schroyer, a video editor at the Colorado Springs Gazette, whose Subaru wagon was carried off wholesale by a river of mud in the Waldo Canyon burn scar following a massive rainstorm on Wednesday. Somehow — and don’t ask me how — John Davis and the crew from MotorWeek once managed to get their hands on what is arguably the baddest production Subaru of all time, the Impreza 22Bi STi. Get ready to be blown away. That’s an impressive get, considering that the right-hand-drive, 350 horsepower 22B was never sold on our shores. I won’t even ask about the bribes and blackmail that must have gone into making this… Read More →

Subaru is already having to increase production of the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid because of incredible customer response. Can you have both all-wheel-drive and fuel-efficiency? What is Subaru doing to create such a strong demand for their first hybrid that it is already breaking sales targets by huge margins? Subaru Japan has just announced that demand for their first hybrid model is outstripping their projected sales targets by more than ten times. Read More →

Records are meant to be broken. Even really, really obscure ones. And that’s exactly what Itasca and Subaru officials hope to do Saturday. The village and Subaru of America Inc. Great Lakes Region, which is based in Itasca, will attempt to break their current Guinness World Record for the largest parade of Subaru cars. In July 2009 Subaru set the record with 339 vehicles parading along a 4.2-mile route through Itasca. The village and Subaru… Read More →

If any carmaker should already have had a hybrid in its lineup, it’s Subaru. We’ve said that before, and before the end of the year, we’ll know much more about the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid that was unveiled at last spring’s New York Auto Show. But it turns out that Subaru now has two unexpected hits on its hands. In Japan, the company announced, it received 5,850 orders for the Crosstrek Hybrid in just… Read More →

Subarus and their owners have always been quirky. The designs are usually on the weird side, the advertising campaigns un-traditional, and the powertrains out of step with the rest of the industry. Take this 2014 Forester 2.5i Premium, for instance. Where most of its rivals feature inline four-cylinder engines, automatic transmissions, and an optional front-biased all-wheel-drive system, our tester has a flat-four, standard full-time 50-50-split all-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual transmission. In this traditional… Read More →

Scott’s Comment: We’ve come a long way.. I owned a 79 DL station wagon (same body style as this) for about a year and a half that I eventually sold to a buddy for $300.00. Truly rusty but trusty at that point, the driver’s foot well filled with water every time it was wet due to a hole in the front wheel well. But it went through everything I could throw at it and then… Read More →

Subaru is hard at work wrapping up the development of the 2015 Outback crossover. Our spy shooters caught this pre-production Outback clad in camouflage, and out testing alongside a 2013 Audi Allroad Quattro and a 2013 Toyota RAV4. It looks like the 2015 Outback will be an evolution, not a complete overhaul like that applied to the Outback line in 2010. To help keep the 2015 Outback up to date, it appears Subaru will smooth… Read More →

A camouflaged 2015 Subaru Outback prototype has been spotted testing on public roads. New spy shots reveal substantial updates for the heavily redesigned wagon-like crossover that should separate it from the current model, which first went on sale in 2009. Despite the camouflage, a more steeply raked windshield and rear window give the Outback prototype a sleeker profile compared to the current model. Read More →
