Only two out of thirteen small SUV’s that were put through front-end crash tests received approval ratings from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). The only vehicle to get the top rating of “good” was the 2014 Subaru Forester. Mitsubishi’s 2013 Outlander Sport received an “acceptable” rating. Each of the other eleven models, including three of the top-selling models, the Honda CR-V, Jeep Wrangler, and Ford Escape were rated by the IIHS’s rated t… Read More →

Stereoscopic cameras in the windshield with 3D vision give the Subaru Forester compact SUV an exclusive and affordable array of driver assists including adaptive cruise control and pedestrian collision avoidance. Add 35 mpg fuel economy on trips and serious room-for-five plus cargo, and you’ve got what is currently ExtremeTech’s pick for the best compact SUV. In fact, the Forester would be a landslide choice were it not for a modest navigation system that is out… Read More →

In a market flooded with small and midsize crossovers, Subaru steps up to the plate with something completely different in the shape of the XV Crosstrek Hybrid. What could be so different, you might ask? How about a boxer engine with a hybrid? We’ve been hearing about hybrids since the Toyota Prius surfaced in 1997, and the technology is now found in almost all segments — and it will serve as part of the base… Read More →

Of the criticisms of our 2013 Subaru BRZ Premium, few are louder — or more easily remedied — than those bemoaning the infotainment system. The standard system, which uses a touchscreen to link GPS navigation, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and SiriusXM/AM/FM radio, has been criticized for its small buttons and confusing menu structure. We say easily remedied for a reason, however: the Subaru shares its dash layout (and its standard, double-DIN opening) with Scion, which… Read More →

I’m not really sure why, but the Subaru SVX has definitely become my latest automotive curiosity over the last week or so. Yes, I know it only ever came with a boring 4-speed auto, but it’s a fascinating relic from the Japanese bubble era. Check out this video to see why it’s so cool! What we have here is an incredibly sexy Giugaro-designed sports coupe with a 3.3-liter six-cylinder Boxer engine and many of the… Read More →

Subaru launches their first ever hybrid model and it comes with fuel-saving technology and newly released features that set it apart from the standard XV model. What we did know was that the new 2014 XV Hybrid will feature Subaru’s excellent Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and 8.7 inches of ground clearance for off-road capability. We didn’t know the new hybrid model will get a few new features for the chassis, exterior and hybrid system to enhance… Read More →

When one thinks of a safari, they naturally draw pictures in their mind’s eye of wild animals, like lions, elephants and giraffes. I’m no different, and it was with visions of long telephoto lenses over vast runes and dunes that I embarked on a 19-hour plane ride from Phoenix, Arizona to Plettenberg Bay in South Africa, camera gear in tow. My particular safari through the wilds of South Africa included none of those things, however.… Read More →

When the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins arrived, Carlos Lago and other Motor Trend editors hoped tuners wouldn’t screw up the lightweight rear-drive coupes’ balance. On this episode of Ignition, Lago runs the turbocharged Crawford Performance Subaru BRZ through Motor Trend‘s standard tests before heading to the race track to find out if the heavily modified BRZ stays true to its roots. We recently spent three days with a new 2014 Subaru Forester XT–the more powerful turbocharged model–driving South Africa’s Garden Route along the country’s south coast, from Plettenburg Bay to Cape Town. The drive included quite a few single-lane dirt and gravel roads, along with a few memorable mountain passes. Together, they gave us a feeling for how the new Forester XT coped with the kind of rough roads that Subarus are often used on. And… Read More →
