Jim Elder, 80, and his wife Suzanne, 78, keep helmets in the back of their Subaru. Red gas cans are stacked on the roof and fog lights are attached to the front bumper, “aimed a little bit out to look for critters,” Jim said. The Manhattan couple will compete next week in a 5,000-mile, 10-day road rally from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska.
