You may already know how MotorTrend feels about the new 2022 Subaru WRX based on our First Drive coverage. Subaru’s latest take on its rally-inspired AWD sport sedan is, as senior features editor Jonny Lieberman described it, “fun, if not great, to drive, shockingly competent at sticking to pavement, practical, and a true performance bargain. ” When we inquired at that drive event, the Subaru representatives were surprisingly tight-lipped regarding a 0-60-mph estimate. For the second time this season, Brandon Semenuk has passed Ken Block on the final stage of a rally for the win. But he’s not sure he can do it for a third time. The first time was when Block hit a deer on 100 Acre Wood. Now, after a dust-filled stage on which Brandon had a clean road, he had the edge to pull 0.9 seconds ahead of the Hoonigan Hyundai for a last-minute… Read More →

Though it has a global following at its highest levels, rallying has always been a bit of a niche sport. In a way, that’s part of its appeal. A driver and a co-driver hustle a small, often wildly overpowered car through the woods on gravel roads, sometimes to glory, sometimes to spectacular catastrophe. It can be a gripping spectacle, even if the noise and adrenaline aren’t for everyone. But a small, homegrown rally team from… Read More →

Fewer modern cars carry more of an enthusiast-centric, fun-to-drive pedigree than the Subaru WRX. Developed as the street-going version of a rally racing hero, the WRX came to American shores in 2002 as the Impreza WRX—10 years after its first release in Japan—and quickly won the hearts of anyone in search of exciting turbocharged power combined with all-wheel drive grip. Since its arrival, the ‘Rex underwent two generation changes with Impreza printed in front of… Read More →

But driving satisfaction isn’t the only thing the BRZ does well. The car is also really safe in a crash, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Read More →
