The Subaru WRX has long been the car for drivers who want some turbocharged fun but still need a commuter that’s reliable in all four seasons. For 2022, the WRX enters its fifth generation with a complete redesign, but that same rally-for-the-road ethos is very much alive and well. Read More →

ack in the day, we used to run “How Would You Configure” articles for new cars. As soon as a build-and-price tool was posted, we’d put together the perfect, erudite spec for the vehicle in question. But when I ventured to Subaru’s website this morning to try the shiny new configurator for the 2022 WRX, I noticed something odd: Across every trim level of the car, there’s only one (1) option package available. While we know Subaru as quite a sporty brand in 2022, that wasn’t always the case. Subaru wasn’t exactly a brand that you would associate with fast, exotic sports cars in the 1980s. This was a time when its rivals were producing cars such as the Toyota MR2 and the Nissan GT-R. But soon, that would change. Subaru wanted to take a leap into the supercar and sports car world. And because of that, they… Read More →

It’s not unusual to see the Subaru Forester on a best compact SUV list, so it doesn’t surprise us that Consumer Reports recommends it as well. This year’s model has a few new pieces to add to its appeal, making Subaru‘s offering quite impressive. Still, what makes it even more astounding is that the 2022 Subaru Forester makes this the ninth year the model has made CR’s best list. Read More →

You know that squint thing that people — myself included — do when they aren’t wearing their glasses? Or the little spectacle raise and head tilt, and a potential squint, to get a better view of something blurry? You don’t need to do that if you’re the driver of the 2022 Subaru Ascent. Everything in the front cabin is very easy to see and labelled with big, bold letters, but I’ll get back to that… Read More →

For many ’80s and ’90s kids, the Gran Turismo series opened up a door to previously unheard-of motoring icons. From the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution to the Subaru Impreza WRX, car-obsessed gamers could virtually pilot automotive forbidden fruit from the comfort of their living rooms. While the first-generation Impreza was available locally, the brand never offered the WRX derivative in the US. Still, the nameplate has amassed a massive following since then, with successive models eventually… Read More →

The mark of any true sportscar is properly terrible cupholders. Take the current Mazda MX-5 and its wonky reconfigurable holders: they’re either tucked back between the seats or stuck in the passenger’s footwell. Likewise, the parallel cupholders in the new 2022 Subaru BRZ are just awful, designed by somebody who apparently thinks human beings absorb fluids with their elbows. Or maybe they just expect you to keep both hands on the wheel. Read More →

In 1991, Subaru decided that innovation was the answer to winning the luxury car war. The result was the wedge-shaped SVX that featured striking styling and a host of new features and technologies. Unfortunately, the customer disagreed with Subaru’s vision of the future, and the SVX turned out to be a massive flop. Still, fine examples of the underrated SVX remain on the used market. The JDM, or Japanese Domestic Market, model was fittingly called… Read More →

The World Rally Championship’s Group A era that falls between the fearsome Group B monsters and 1997-onwards era of World Rally Cars often gets forgotten about in the annals of rally history. But for M-Sport WRC team leader Craig Breen, a Subaru from that period stands out as his all-time favourite car Read More →

Traction is the great equalizer in racing. No matter how much power or aero you have, you’ll always be limited by how much of it you can actually translate to the surface. This race between a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and a Subaru Impreza on ice is a great demonstrator. Despite the great disparity in specs, the two cars were matched up in the same heat during a recent Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club-sanctioned ice racing… Read More →
