Workers at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant in Lafayette are back on the job this week, following a two-week furlough, stemming from a global shortage of semiconductors. The company suspended production last month because of an interruption in the supply of certain parts that rely on microchips, a problem the entire auto industry is facing. Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 61,389 vehicle sales for April 2021, the company’s best-ever April sales and a 100.5 percent increase compared to April 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic impacted the global economy at large. Subaru is not a player in the midsize, full-size, or heavy-duty pickup truck segments. It doesn’t currently offer anything with a bed—today. It wasn’t always that way, though.
