Japan’s Subaru sees profit slide on stronger yen, rising marketing costs

Japan’s Subaru Corp (7270.T) on Friday forecast a third-straight year of falling operating profit as it expects a stronger yen and increased marketing costs in the United States to offset higher global car sales. Subaru and bigger rivals including Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) are bracing for a slide in operating profit due to a stronger yen, which can squeeze earnings repatriated from abroad. It also raises costs of exported… Read More →

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is the company’s first plug-in

The Subaru Crosstrek is a fine vehicle, with its competent all-wheel-drive system and generous cargo capacity, but for those Subaru fans who own stock in Birkenstock and eat nothing but granola, its purely internal combustion engine is an affront to all that is decent. Thankfully, Subaru understands this part of its demographic and is ready to pull the sheet off of its first-ever plug-in hybrid and resurrect the Crosstrek Hybrid nameplate. Read More →

Safest Cars of 2018: The List Has Shrunk to Just These 16 Models

I don’t think anyone second guesses their safety when they’re behind the wheel. Perhaps there are a couple exceptions for cars such as the Fiat 500 and the notoriously dinky Smart Fortwo – who’d feel safe in a collision with one of those cars? But after the 2018 IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick Plus rankings, you might question how secure you actually are. Read More →

Your car brakes are suddenly a fashion statement

High-fashion brake calipers will be one of the next frontiers in automotive design, as big, low-profile tyres and open-faced wheels grow more common. At least that’s what the brake manufacturers are saying. According to Brembo North America president and CEO Dan Sandberg, the company already makes calipers in more than 100 colours, including 12 shades of red (for years, bright-red Brembo calipers have been a badge of honour for performance cars), but now automakers are… Read More →

Toyota Is Making A Second Generation Of The 86

Whatever the reason, we should be getting a second-gen Toyota 86, per a report from Autocar. Whether or not the new version is going to be developed along with Subaru isn’t apparent, and Toyota executives are saying nothing about it. One of the reasons why the first-gen Toyota 86 handles so well is the boxer engine drops the center of gravity closer to the ground. To forgo such a design for the second generation would… Read More →
