Test drive: 2024 Subaru Solterra feels fit for the blue highways

Subaru’s vehicles have never completely fallen in line with the mainstream. As I spent more time with the brand’s first electric car, the Solterra, it started to make sense that there’s no reason to think its EVs will shed the Gore-Tex look. This all-wheel-drive electric crossover is simply on its own trip versus other EVs. After a brief sample of the Solterra off-pavement, I recently covered more than 400 miles in the Solterra, with the… Read More →

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd, the maker of Subaru cars, plans to invest $400 million to expand production capacity at its sole U.S. plant in Indiana by around 100,000 vehicles, the Japanese automaker said on Wednesday. The company, which exports nearly 70 percent of its Japan-made production, wants to make more vehicles in its biggest market, the United States, to limit the impact of currency moves. Along with the expansion, which will utilize an existing line,… Read More →

The 1986 Subaru 4WD Wagon Can Go Where the Sick Cows Are

y the middle 1980s, the Subaru Leone had become bigger and more powerful than its butt-of-jokes predecessors, and its optional four-wheel-drive system was a bigger seller than ever. Here’s a magazine advertisement hyping the ability of a turbocharged 4WD Subaru wagon to get a Wisconsin large-animal veterinarian to his patients. Read More →

National Park Service Warns Subaru Driver for Taking All-Wheel-Drive Car on 4-Wheel-Drive Road

It may be common knowledge amongst car enthusiasts, but the layperson would likely be quite surprised to learn that four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive aren’t the same thing. The difference between the two systems—among other things, like tires and proper off-road gear—can be the difference between completing a trail or needing a challenging rescue — and the National Park Service apparently knows it. One Reddit user found this out firsthand after he was apparently issued a written… Read More →

This Is The 670bhp, 9500rpm Subaru WRX ‘Project Midnight’

Subaru’s North American rally division got us all on edge recently when it started teasing ‘Project Midnight’, a mad-looking one-off based on the Subaru WRX, built with one purpose: going very quickly up the hill at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. In those teasers, we were promised a “radical departure” from the usual Subaru fare that would “shock the crowd in a completely different way.” Those vague statements made us think that maybe, just… Read More →

Some Subaru electrification plans flexible

Elections have consequences — including for the product plans of midsize Japanese automakers. Subaru is slowly working on a redesign of its three-row Ascent crossover, but the brand’s largest vehicle will be replaced by the three-row electric vehicle being built in Kentucky by Toyota if regulations tightening emissions remain in place. However, if the November election outcome changes emission requirements, the gasoline-fueled Ascent will be redesigned and offer a hybrid variant alongside the Toyota-built EV.… Read More →
