THE WEEKEND WITH THE RIGHT DRIVERS IN THE WRONG CARS

Alister McRae doesn’t do panicking. It’s just not him. Last Friday morning was about as close as the Scot got. Wheeling Steve Rimmer’s Ford RS200 out of the holding area towards Goodwood’s famous hill, the Group B car stopped. The door opened. Right foot off the throttle, the big Garrett turbo charger silenced briefly, big Al leaned out of the door. “David,” he shouted, “do you know where reverse is?” Read More →

Watch Travis Pastrana Wrangle the 850-HP Subaru Huckster Up the Goodwood Hill

Activities at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed were canceled Saturday due to hazardous weather, but the closing stages of Friday produced some incredibly exciting racing. Heavy rain made the already-challenging Goodwood hill climb a real handful for some of the world’s best racers, though some drivers seemed to relish the challenge more than others. And by “some” I just mean famous rally driver and all-around motoring daredevil Travis Pastrana. Read More →

2023 Subaru WRX Review: A New Look, But With the Same Rally Roots

The Subaru WRX has been a favorite of rally drivers and light off-roaders for years. The vehicle and its trademarked Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system have won races on almost every continent over the last few decades. Subaru introduced the WRX, then a high performance version of the Impreza sedan and hatchback, in 1992, but it didn’t come to America until ten years later. Last year Subaru debuted a new WRX, no longer based on the Impreza. It… Read More →

WHAT SEMENUK NEEDS TO DO TO BE ARA CHAMPION THIS WEEKEND

Unless something extraordinary happens, this weekend’s New England Forest Rally will confirm Subaru Motorsports USA’s Brandon Semenuk and Keaton Williams as double Green APU American Rally Association National champions. After an intense to-and-fro battle with the late Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino that went right down to the wire last year, things couldn’t have been more different for the Subaru stars in 2023. 2024 Subaru Ascent Review: The Outback of three-row SUVs

The three-row crossover SUV segment has seen a recent influx of style and near-luxury accommodations that has left the 2024 Subaru Ascent looking like a rugged, no-nonsense hiking boot amidst an aisle of colorful, fashionable trail running shoes. Oh sure, Subaru tried to spruce up the Ascent last year with a new front end, but the garish new grille just made it ugly instead of forgettable. Meanwhile, the interior saw a worthwhile tech update, but… Read More →

Prodrive Subaru P25 (Impreza WRX) Review

A single loud report from a big-bore titanium exhaust announced the Prodrive P25’s arrival. We had started hearing the growl of an approaching car a little earlier, definitely something with a decent helping of horsepower, but perhaps, we thought, it was some other potent machine, just passing by. However, properly bred rally cars generally produce a characteristic crack, when the engine ignition is cut to facilitate their near-instant gearchanges, and that sound was unmistakable. Read More →

REMEMBERING MARK LOVELL AND ROGER FREEMAN

American titles are nothing new to Subaru. Brandon Semenuk will, more than likely, have another one chalked up in a matter of days. That wasn’t always the case. In 2000, when the Japanese manufacturer was looking for a way into US rallying, Mark Lovell answered the call. And delivered immediate success, guiding a Vermont SportsCar-run Impreza to the 2001 SCCA Pro-Rally Championship. American rallying appealed to Mark. It was run the way the sport should… Read More →
