Subaru Rally Racer Brandon Semenuk’s Extreme Mountain Biking Gives Him An Edge

For modern race car drivers, being in top physical condition is part of a winning strategy. Long gone are days of debauchery between the race weekends; today’s top drivers are some of the most well-conditioned athletes in the world, even though their “sport” includes sitting in a seat and turning a steering wheel while tickling gas, brake and clutch pedals. Not exactly a decathlon, but as with most things in life, being in good physical condition brings an edge to almost any competition.
For some (if not most), that means long hours doing specific racing-related workouts in the gym, but it’s also not unusual for drivers to participate in “other” wheeled sports besides their occupation of choice. For example, many MotoGP motorcycle racers ride motocross “for fun” during the off season as it’s a physically intensive – but still related – activity. For rally driver Brandon Semenuk, he supplements his time behind the wheel of Subaru’s American Rally Association championship winning WRX by doing some Red Bull Rampage-level mountain biking. We tracked his progress last year as the rally racing circuit came to the Pacific Northwest.
