Clouds of dust explode, sending trillions of sand granules flying as rally vehicles roar through the desert. The occasional shrub, boulder or roving camel become innocent bystanders as a four-decade-old race returns to the heart of Saudi Arabia.
This is the Dakar Rally. It’s one of the world’s most grueling and treacherous off-road races that covers more than 5,000 miles of rugged and rocky terrain as well as silty, tsunami-sized sand dunes. Elevation changes and rolling trails pit men and women participants against each other, the clock and unexpected encounters. This year the 14-day race started on January 1.
