It could be argued that one of, if not the, most famous automotive rivalries to start on the rally stages… didn’t actually start on the rally stages. Certainly, when both the Subaru WRX and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution debuted in the World Rally Championship in 1993, it kick-started a 33-year rivalry that would transcend motor racing, develop dueling fanbases, and leave one forever synonymous with the other.
And yet, it could be argued that Subaru vs. Mitsubishi actually began with the Japanese Touring Car Championship in 1990…
