As a relatively small automaker, Subaru lacks the resources for its own EV development program, so the company has partnered with Toyota on its previous EV models such as Solterra. The new compact Subaru Uncharted EV shares its underpinnings with Toyota’s bZ EV. Toyota led development on the car, and it is built in a Toyota factory.
The bigger Subaru Trailseeker, on the other hand, saw much more Subaru input, though Toyota is also involved. “Trailseeker is a little bit different, in that Subaru did additional engineering, Subaru did additional design, and Subaru does manufacturing for both the [Toyota] bZ Woodland and the Trailseeker,” explained Subaru Carline Planning Manager for Trailseeker, Garrick Goh, at the Trailseeker’s press preview drive in Laguna Beach, CA.
