Last month a new customer brought in his 2012 Subaru Forester X. He said every time he fills his wiper fluid, it leaks out almost immediately. He added that it leaks even faster when he engages the washer sprayers. We lifted the car and removed the lower-left front-fender liner to gain access to the washer reservoir. That’s when we discovered that three of the hoses were damaged – but not by normal wear and tear.… Read More →

Yoshio Hirakawa – the man responsible for the development, testing and production of both coupés – was adamant throughout development that the Subaru should be the more focused of the duo, so he ensured that the BRZ received slightly sharper steering, a keener front end and better high-speed damping than the more ‘luxurious’ GT86. And in our minds, it has always been the purest distillation of what the ‘Toyobaru’ should be. Read More →

Scott’s Comments: How far away are self driving cars? Good question. This article by Consumer Reports gives a pretty comprehensive overview of where we are at and the challenges that still exist. For example.. “Researchers scan for weird incidents among the millions of test-car miles. This has yielded oddities, such as the Google car that stopped cold while a woman in an electric wheelchair did circles in the road ahead. She was chasing a duck… Read More →

In what was once an industrial-age foundry along the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University has created a long-standing hub for the development of autonomous vehicle technology—the National Robotics Engineering Center. I bought my first car in 2009—a 1992 Subaru SVX—for $4,600. It had 87,000 miles on it. That was the beginning of my Subaru obsession. I have owned 13 of them and I now have four. What do I love about these cars? 1) Subarus do not do any one thing really well. But they do everything pretty good, and that’s enough for me. 2) They can go anywhere. I take my all-wheel-drive 1999 Legacy… Read More →

The idea of a non-truckish four-wheel-drive station wagon was still a radical one in 1979, though American Motors was gearing up to release the Eagle for the following model year. Subaru started selling four-wheel-drive Leone wagons for the American market in the 1975 model year, and they found a devoted niche following in places with lots of snow and outdoorsy behavior. Here’s a magazine ad for the Subaru 4WD wagon from April, 1979. Read More →
