Nothing has been luckier for Subaru’s product planners than the incidental introduction of Outback as a trim level on the 1995 Legacy station wagon. The new variant crossed the streams and captured the zeitgeist, and now, 31 years later, the 2026 Outback Wilderness is a refreshed trim level for a car that started out as a trim level. That’s quite a legacy, given that there isn’t even a Legacy anymore.
The Wilderness name isn’t new, but for 2026 it gains more visual clout, this coming atop the revised Outback, which is bulkier and boxier than before. There’s still a hint of station wagon, but only a hint. This Outback is all crossover SUV.
